One thing about our new H23 that baffles me and annoys my wife are those angled cutouts on the cockpit seats. You H23 owners know what I'm talking about - the ones with the teak strip that bridges across. Can anyone explain what hunter was thinking when they designed those in there?

Hiking

I'm also new to my new old '86 H23 as this is my first season. As for the teak strips, I have used them as toe holds when hiking. A bit low for grab rails but ???????? Jerry S/V Shapieron

Cut outs?

I posted that question a couple years ago and did not find out anything. I took my teak strips off and put screws in the holes to seal them. Its much more comfortable to sit there now. I have no idea what Hunter had in mind for those. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

Someplace to but wood

I think that marketing told them that to sell boats, you had to have teak. So that was one plance they couldput some teak. I agree, a little wood is nice. Too much is not. Brian

They are hiking strips

to put your feet in. My size 12s don't fit!! I never drive the boat that hard anyway.

A place to st ep on, maybe

Mine are constructed with ridges, so I have always assumed they were to stand on when boarding or egreessing, but we know what "assume" really means!!

All guesses! :) It'd be interesting to see if the folks at hunter even know what they were designed for. I'm wondering if they had trouble getting the deck out of the mold and needed a bit more relief. But that's only my wild guess too. :)

They can be used for table supports

The fellow I bought my 23 off of gave me a teak table that has longer edges on the end trim pieces that fit down in these rails. That way, if you can't go below or just want to eat topside, you can. Works great!

Good support when grinding winch

I dunno either, but one of mine broke and I found that it was real comfortable to kneel on when the boat is heeled and you need to grind in that last bit of the jibsheet with the winch. It's also a good footrest. Now, what does it do WITH the boards in place? Apart from hanging excess mainsheet and traveler control line, I have no idea. Peter H23 "Raven"
