Question #1.....In:doh: winterizing my boat.I used some duct tape to cover the coaming seat hinges.I'm also covering cracks where freezing rain my enter around seating area in cockpit area.....is the use of duct tape a problem?

#2.....my trailer has P205 R 75/14 tires. I need a spare and a friend gave me two near new tires sized P205 R 70/14.....can I use these in place of the R 75? whats the :redface:difference?

It will probably leave some residue that can be removed with "Goof-Off". WD-40, or somthing similar.


The difference is the aspect ratio of the tire one is 70% wideas it is tall the other 75% or a 75 is not as wide as a 70 which is not as wide as a 60 etc..

Just make sure they are ST rated trailer tires and you'll be fine. I guess for a spare a car tire is OK to just get you off the highway

If the duct tape is out in the weather, especially the sun, it will be a disintegrated mess by spring.

We went through this recently in another post. There is a lot of stuff on trailer tires in the archives. IMHO the new search engiine is far superior to the old one.

Anyway: The comment about using only ST tires is important: Trailer tires have a stiffer sidewall than passenger car tires and are able to take more abuse, like dropping off the edge of the road, or hitting curbs. Passenger car or light truck tires are not designed to take the trailer sway and heat generated from it. As already noted trailer tires also have higher inflation pressures (50 pounds and up depending on the load rating). This results in a cooler running tire. Car tires these days are rated at 36 PSI max. They are ok on a very light load but are not recommended when the tires are loaded at or near their maximum load capacity as boat trailers and RV's typically are.

Duct Tape not the answer

Mark, get a tarp to cover the whole boat & ditch the duct tape... nasty stuff!

I FINALLY got my baby covered last night. Used the tarp frame (slightly modified) that casperc posted. I am really relieved it's done. It's just been so busy this fall & the snow/rain/wind/cold has hit us earlier than normal!
