I raise and lower the mast while underway and I need your comments if I purchase a furler (no specific brand as yet) what difficulties, if any, will I encounter when raising/lowering. Don't know a thing about how a furler will be installed and I want to know which brand makes mast raising/lowering the easiest and anything other wisdom you guys can share. Blessings to you all this Easter!!

Arturo, I have a CDI on my 95 H26 and to raise

and lower the mast is a simple task when done at the dock or while on the trailer. To lower and then raise the mast while afloat could be a bit of work. The only difference with a furler is the extra weight on the forestay. You simply hook up a forestay wire now with your "hanked on sail". With a furler and the weight of the jib sail you need a much stronger pull to hook the forestay to the bow. On the trailer when I rig my boat before launch I use the boom vang block assy. to pull the furler "forestay" and hook it up as I raise the mast. To do this with the boat floating and without the trailer to stand on would be very, very hard. I think the CDI furler was the factory supplied unit and I have had very good service out of mine. CDI

We used to install the CDI Flexible Furler on the 23 and 26 Hunters and they are probably the easiest for raising and lowering the mast, but as Ray mentioned I never did it under way.

CDI voids the warranty!

I just bought a CDI for my '79 H30, and their instructions make very clear that one should not attempt to lower and raise the mast while underway with the furler installed, and that this will void the CDI warranty.

I'm considering the same upgrade...

...for my H26. After researching, I'm leaning toward CDI, mainly because it's the only one with an integral halyard. If your furler uses the existing mast halyard to hoist the jib, then you have to lower the jib and remove it from the furler in order to lower the mast, since the mast halyard is used as part of the mast lowering tackle.

More thoughts on a furler

Tks for all the good responses. Where can I get a CDI catalog showing how the furler connects to the bow? What happens to the forestay..does it remain the same. Has anyone used a stay adjuster in conjunction with a furler? Would that make it easier to re-connect the furler when raising the mast? You can see where I'm going with this..so speak up if this whole idea is crazy.

It souds like you put the head sail on the

furler before you raise the mast. Is that correct? I've never used a furler before and feel really stupid about this.
