I recently replaced my bulkhead compass and during the process discovered that the companionway bulkheads slope toward the bow as they move toward the centerline, about 2 1/2 to 3 degrees of permanent installed compass error.
So I made a sloped shim from Meranti plywood. It's sealed in epoxy and gel coate and is glued to the bulkhead with Sika 291. The compass through-bolts then go through the entire assy.
Of course I discovered the sloping bulkhead after I did an install and cut my through-bolts off to length. With the shim now installed the bolts are too short to attach the back cover. Cudos to Ritchie Navigation as they are sending a new installation package free of charge. BTW, this is a nice compass the Ritchie Venture SR-22.
