Water filling up in bilge after rain. Sat in cabin and watched for leaks during storm, nothing visible and no information gained by looking into the tiny bilge opening by compression post to hopefully see from which way it's trickling in.

Any H22 owners with tips? Concerned it's the hull-deck joint, dripping underneath the cabin liner...

I was having a similar situation in my '86 H23. To make long story short, the drain hose from the anchor locker was *really* rotten and leaking. If you have an anchor locker I highly recommend you check the drain hose.

I think mud was collecting from Yours Truly not rinsing the mud off the anchor properly. The mud then froze and broke the hose. I always wondered why keeping the anchor mud-free was so important. Now I know. Even if the mud hadn't frozen the hose would have backed up from all the mud.

In the year and a half of being a member here I've seen several posts suggesting checking the anchor locker drain hose. I never checked mine since it had not been long since the boat was surveyed and the hose was in great shape. So, check your drain hose if you have one.

Kermit, there is no anchor locker drain hose, just a hole the washes directly out

So you say that you didn't see any drips? Is the water rust/coffee colored? This also helps identify where the leak is coming from.

Usually by this age the ports and windows start leaking, both of mine were. I also have a leak from the forward hatch, which will need replacing to fix the leak. I also had leaks from around the chainplates, stantion (sp?) bases, and a couple spots on the toe rail. Also know that the head liner, has a lip to it so water may be coming entering in one area, but dripping in a very different.

Thanks guys. It doesn't seem that the water is rust colored and no, I waited inside during a storm for a while and could not locate any drips. Definitely not off any thru-deck bolts for the stantions, etc. Can there be a leak from the deck to hull joint that would drip in between the cabin liner and hull?

Crazy Dave would be best to answer the deck to hull joint, as he is most familiar with how they are built. But I thought that the joint has a lip to it to prevent water intrusion like that.

Leaks sometimes can be hard to find. This week I am rebedding everything on an older Hunter 27 plus alot of other work as a volunteer for the Boy Scout camps with sailboat fleets.

If the boat is in the water and no water is found in the bilge as it has not rained, then the leak or leaks are coming in and it could be from anywhere. Here is what I did to find those pesky leaks with the help of one other person. First, close everything off and tape around the windows. Then take a large plastic piece and tape over the companionway. Make a small slit in the plastic big enough for a leaf blower. Have on hand a bucket of very soapy water with a big ole brush.

Then insert the leaf blower tube into the slit and tape the plastic to it. Turn on the leaf blower and then let the other person go over every fitting on the exterior of the boat to find air leaks as it will bubble when applying soapy water with a brush to the fitting. Also do this around the rub rail for air bubbles.

What you have done is to pressurize the interior of the boat and air has to escape and it will be where water is coming in. Please let me know what you find out at my email davecondon@mindspring.com

Check the cockpit drain hoses. reseal stanchion bases. reseal mast base. check drain hoses from deck scuppers for cracked hose or loose clamps. tighten toe rail screws. check the thru hull for sink drain. I know not rain problem. reseal blocks for jib sheets. I have done all this to mine and reduced leakage considerably. Cock pit drain hoses can be replaced using flexible radiator hose from advance auto.

Also reseal teak strips that retain the companionway hatch. If water is coming in the top it runs down lip on edge of liner and drips on quarter berth cushions.

Never heard back if the cabin was pressurized and someone else looked for air bubbles on the outside when brushing soapy water all over the fittings, windows/ports, etc. Please advise to davecondon@mindspring.com. I will post findings but again no private info will be given on the forums as I protect everyone who contacts me other than what the boat is, problems and fixes. I guess I value everyone's privacy.

I had a about the same thing I ended up replacing all the hoses the biggest was the deck drains and through hulls on top. And check the cockpit drain hoses. Run some water in the cockpit drains and get a flashlight crawl up in the starboard side. All my hoses were bad.

Ended up being the anchor locker drain. Spread some 4200 in there and no more water in bilge.

Be careful with radiator hoses. I used one for my cockpit drain on a H23. I used the one that had that steel sping insert to keep it form kinking up. When I took it off while the boat is out, i noticed the coil inside ws rusted bad. I bought the same hose again and got thinking if the coil rusted again, and failed, the hose would kink and stop the drain, possibly sinking the boat. This happened to a friend of mine, bad day. It could also catch crap that gets washed down there and stop up from being rusty.

It is on the mooring most of the time and will sit on its side once in a while. I went to the evil empire (west marine) and bought some of their white flexible reinforced hose. Works great and seems like it will have more long term integrity. I have radiator hose in my anchor locker drain with the same rig. I will be getting rid of that too.

Where ever you get the hose make sure the inside is smooth no ridges. I bought some marine grade drainage hose. It wouldn't titan down enough to stop leaking.

I took delivery of my 2012 H22 in July. I get water in the cabin every time it rains and I believe it dribbles down the mast. Hunter supply a cloth collar but this is not water proof. I have discussed this with Hunter but they say I should expect water in the cabin - NO WAY!!! I believe that there should be a rubber seal between the mast and the cockpit roof and between the cabin roof door and the mast but Hunter are being very unhelpful. Has anyone else experienced this and got a satisfactory answer to the problem?

Check for water draining down the sail guide grove on the main mast (presuming the H22 is similar in construction to the H216). This was/is a chronic problem with the H216 and the only way to really fix it is to fill the sail guide grove with caulk where it passes through the cuddy top after which is is possible to get a good seal around the main mast.

Been forever but if unfixed and this can help here it is. I had same mystery leak. Couldn't figure out. Checked thru hulls, hoses, etc. Answer? The deck screws were a little loose and water collecting in there across the hull led to leaks dripping inside along the deck edge. You can run your finger along it and feel the wetness and probably see a drip moving toward the rear. (if on trailer they usually travel that way) Then drip falls down side of boat around cockpit or below it and voila. Answer was to back out screws that were loose a little, squeeze a small amount of silicone on threads and tighten. Halfway done. Then apply a bead of silicone from the bow all the way along both sides where cabin top and sides are connected and make sure you get it up between the two. Hunter laid a bead and tightened screws but as motion and heat and cold do its work it separates the two. You're basically reahesive-ing the deck to the hull. SOunds harder than it is. Takes a couple hrs and you can lay on your side alot!

Oh regarding the bead along the sides I wanted to make it clear that's on the interior not outside. The screws on the deck are exterior but silicone bead is interior from front to back. I'm not talking about 'lifting' up deck just squeeze silicone where the top and hull are connecting inside. OK?
