In search of my next boat Palm Harbor, FL
I have an 85 H22. While it is on the hard, I would like to de-step the mast. I am kind of familiar with stepping and de-stepping from sailing beach cats most my life. But this mast has an anchor light, vhf cable, and I believe a grounding cable. Also the mast shrouds are a lot taughter than they are on Hobies and Nacras. Before I go and start taking it down, can someone tell me what I can expect from the internal wiring, and what I should do about the shrouds.

Thanks in advance.

If yours is like the H23, the wiring (in my case, just the anchor masthead light wire) runs through the base plate and up the mast. When you unstep, the wire simply hangs loose through the base.

I loosened the side and backstays, enough so that I could move the stays a bit. On the hard, they will still hold the mast up if somewhat loose. Then lower the mast according to the technique for your boat, probably (if like the 23) using a block and tackle connected to the jib halyard. I don't know how big/heavy the 22 mast is - but consider using a gin pole or other technique (like the triangular rig some have used) to help support the halyard. Search for mast stepping or similar in these forums.

To undo my shrouds, I attach my mainsheet tackle to the jib halyard. A good tug makes the forestay loose enough to undo the pin, and then (with the stronger helper guiding it from the back) you can use the tackle for mechanical advantage letting it down. At about 40 degrees the person in the back needs to shoulder the mast - you then ease the jib halyard from the bow and help lower it from the back
