I have instaled a spinnaker but did not have a chanceto sail with it last year. Does anyone have any advice on sailing a spinnaker in the 216. Is a spinnaker shute a good idea? I was at the boat show a few weeks ago and was looking at a few of them. Is it best to jibe the spinnaker between the forestay and spinnaker tack or jibe it in front of thespinnaker tack?

On your spinnaker

Jibing it between the tack and the headsail works well. Three important things to remember when jibing the spin - before the start of the jibe, make sure that the lazy sheet is above the jib furling drum, the line for the working sheet is free and clear, and that you have someone grasp the working sheet (new lazy sheet) and feed it out as fast as possible. It will not pull itself out fast enough to prevent a wrap. Also a good idea to practice hollering to the crew "Get your foot off the #@*# sheet" and "Your sitting on the #@*# sheet." ;D As far as a sock is concerned, we do not use one on our 216. It is a relatively small chute but if you sail short handed or with an inexperienced crew, it's probably worth considering. As you are pulling down the chute, don't even try to put it into a bag - no matter how big. First, just get it in the boat, then stuff it down the hatch. Launching and dousing into a bag work fine on a boat where you douse and launch from the deck forward of the mast. Launching from the cockpit, it's best to have it loose down in the hatch.

H216 Spinnaker Handline

Mr. Ernie is spot on, especially his comment about hollering at the crew to keep off the working spin sheet...right on Mr. Ernie! A couple notes: 1. We have the bowman call the actual jibe, not the helmsman. The helmsman or tactician tells the bowman he wants to jibe. The bowman acknowledges then starts easing the spin sheet until the clew is even with the forestay or the spin starts to collapse...then he calls the jibe, releases the working sheet, then...quick like a bunny...hauls in on the lazy sheet...avoiding standing or sitting on the working sheet. 2. My crew and I are relative novices with the spinnaker. I bought a sock and it was one of my better purchases. The extra ease and safety of handling the spin is worth the relatively small disadvantages. If we get lots of experience and we get to seriously racing, we will probably abandon the sock..but until then or when casual sailing, it is marvelous. You can make a mountain of mistakes and recover easily by dropping the sock...pause to catch your breath and calm the panic...then try again.

I like the sock

I bought my sock for my 260 from North Sails. It's usually just the wife and myself, or a couple of non sailors. I wouldn't use my asym without a sock. To jibe I just douse it and reset.

H216 Spinnake Sock

I got my sock from ATN over the Internet. I was very pleased with the work quality, customer service, and price. I was the first one with an H216 to order a sock from ATN and I ordered it too long. I went to a seamstress to fix it and fed back the correct length to ATN. That is, if you order from ATN, they should now have the correct measurements on file. Because there in nobody on the fore deck to handle the sock, a few techniques must be developed to 1) avoid hanging the sock up on the spreaders or 2) bring it around to the other side. The techniques are pretty easy and developing them in your driveway is a good idea. Basically you need to lean way forward or have another crew member fiddle the tack to pull the sock away from the shroud. Before I got the sock, I inevitably dropped the spin in the water on the douse when double handling. The silly spin would flutter down to the fore deck then, due to the raised part of the fore deck near the mast, it would slide of the fore deck into the water. With two people, one lowering the halyard and the other stuffing the spin in the cuddy, this doesn't happen. But with one person, it always slid off into the water. With the sock, if you are fast enough, you can release the spin halyard then, quick like a bunny, pull the sock into the cockpit.

SPINNAKER SOCK

I HAVE NOT BOUGHT A SOCK YET. I HAVE SEEM THEM IN WEST MARINIE CATALOG. I HAVE DELT WITH THE ATN REP. AT A SAILBOT SHOW. I WAS IMPRESSED BY THERE PRODUCT AND HOW HELPFUL THE REP WAS. BASED ON RANGER PAULS COMENTS I WILL PROBABLY GET IT FROM ATN. THE ATN SOCK WAS A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN SOME OF THE OTHERS I LOOKED AT BECAUSE IT HAS A FIBERGLASS COLLER TO MAKE IT SLIDE EASIER OVER THE SPINNAKER. IHAVE BEEN TOLD YOU REALLY DO NOT NEED THAT WITH A SMALL SPINNAKER LIKE THE 216 HAS; BUT IT STILL SEEMS LIKE A GOOD IDEA TO ME. IT DOES ADD A COUPLE OF POUNDS HIGH UP ON THE MAST BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT IS MUCH OF A ISSUE. EVERYBODY THANKS FOR THE INFO GARY
