This is a sweet deal. I have reported recently on my installation of an electric winch for raising the mast (documented on this site under the Boat Info tab). Well, my $40 winch failed for some reason. It is still under warranty but the cost of shipping is greater than the cost of a new winch.

In this month's Popular Science there is an advertisement for Harbor Freight with a coupon for a remotely controlled winch for $50. Sweet! This is normally a $100 winch! I bought one yesterday and it is a much better way to go then my original winch. Much easier to install due to the remote control. I am going to run a dedicated heavy wire (fused of course) from the battery to the back of my truck to make sure I supply enough juice to the winch.

When you use the winch I trust you still have to manually guide the mast up so it doesn't sway to one side or the other?

I've been using a removable harbor freight winch w/remote for over 4 yrs. On our old 240 a yr and then 260 for 3. I only use a small 12v jumpstart pack and it's been a perfect combination. Simple, portable and safe. The real secret is the folding closure from CS Johnson that tensions the forestay. Every time I use it I'm amazed how well the whole thing works. Well worth the design effort.
One of the pics is our winch system for the 240 mounted on the trailer, the rest are for the 260 from the anchor well. Your 216 would differ of course. Be safe and good luck.
