I recently purchased a 1983 vintage Hunter 20. I occasionally have to pass under an 18' bridge, so I need an easy system to "lean" the mast back to get under the bridge, then tilt it upright again. Can anyone advise me about how to rig this?

Tilting mast -oboy!

John, If you work this one out let me know. I could use it also. When I was a boy we had a Kestrel 23? or 5. It had a massive iron tabernacle to support the deck-stepped mast. The spruce mast would stand without stays in open seas and could be lowered to pass under bridges. With my 23 there is no tabernacle per say, just an aluminum pad on the deck with a tongue which fits into a slot in the mast foot casting. To lower a mast setup like this underway you’re going to have to control it with brute force alone. Your setup may be better suited. Like I said, let me know what you come up with. Good luck, Greg.

mast raising?

If you have a hinged mast step, you can make one but there is alot to know. Too much to discuss on the forum. feel Free to call. Call Gregg Emerson at Hunter and ask for ole Crazy frazzled worn Plumb tickled Dave and I will see if I can help

Step the mast of a 20

I use the main sheet (block and tackle) to step my mast by connecting it between the jib halyard and the jib halyard deck connection. The halyard length is adjusted to provide the required space for the block and tackle. I never install the front bolt of the two bolts attaching the base of the mast to the boat, this provides the required hinge at the mast base. This system does NOT provide lateral stability and could be tricky underway. I wouldn't try it sailing alone. Good luck Phil TeterForce 1

Spiderweb system

Hi John We use the main sheet block & tackle to raise the mast. And we use a "spiderweb" system to provide lateral stability. This is made from 1/4" laid 3-strand rope. Basically, there is no way that I know of to do this while underway, though. At least I would not want to try it. You can E-mail me for details if you are interested in the "spiderweb. Oh yeh, we also have a bow pulpit mounted, and run the sheet off that. Paul Jacobson H-20 Dawn Treader
