Trip # 3 on the 170 proved to be very exciting. It was a beautiful day with moderate winds on the river...puffy & flukey as expected for a May day. I started my new Yamaha 3hp long shaft for the first time and had immediate confidence that this motor was made for the boat. The long shaft really makes a big difference compared to the short shaft. Weight was again a critical component of the trip on the 170. I decided to sit on the deck in the center to balance the weight of the other two crew members. The weather deteriorated rapidly with the wind really kicking up and I decided to drop sails and motor back directly into the wind to the launch site. For some strange reason, the furler was completely unwound and the jib was still 1/3 out and flapping violently shaking the mast and the entire boat. We were not able to tie a line around the jib as the flapping was above where we could reach. Finally, heading down wind under motor, we were able to remove the jib sheets and furl the sail by hand. The moral of the story is to have a couple of turns on the furler before hooking up the jib/forestay. More next time!

H170

Don, Your trip sounds exciting. We sail an H140. Had the same problem with the furler. We make sure we wind it all the way up when we rig to sail. The small 170 and the 140's are great light air boats. Haven't launched my boat yet. Recovering from shoulder surgery. I'm chomping at the bit. Found that these boats are really stable and forgiving. I buried the transom a couple of times on some real hard jibes and we didn't flip. Just had lots of water and strangely enough fish which we had to let go since I didn't have a license. Gald you like your boat. Been looking at moving up to a 260/270. Waiting for the right price.

Forgot to include!

I forgot to mention in the article that I finally appreciate the value of the soft canvas foredeck cover. I opened the cover to get at the furler and was standing "inside" of the boat rather than on a tipsy deck. That was one of the features I didn't like about the boat but now am happy that I have it.
