My grilfriend and I have just bought a new 1999 Hunter 380. She has asked the question: "How do we maintain the teak cabinetry and bulkheads below deck...?" She Belives that the best way is to 'oil' the wood... I say that the cabinets have a 'finish' and definitely should NOT be 'oiled'... Who's right...? She also asks, "What are the cabin soles treated with, and will anything stain it..." Thanks to all...

Your Wood

Jack...We oil (sorry) our wood with lemon oil and it looks beautiful. On the sole I use old fashoned Johnson and Johnson hardwood floor wax. I put it on by hand and buff it with the power buffer I use on the fibergalss. It keeps the sole looking great..I buy the wax and my local Sears hardware store..So far nothing beer, wine, pasta sauce ect has left a mark>>>> Dick McKee SV Constellation

Don't you polish your furniture in the house/

Jack: Don't we all polish our furniture in the house? Well many of us use Lemon or Citrus oil on our household furniture too. Lemon oil is a very good cleaner and also makes the boat smell good. We know how difficult this is but tell her that you must have been thinking about something else.

oops she's right

Sorry she's right on. We re-oil the teak on our 380 every spring. There after a touch up with Murphy's Oil Soap or Lemon Oil is fine. The floor has ProFin oil on it. You can buy it from Hunter or order it on line. Go to archives and type in ProFin and you'll find it. It's easy to apply with a rag and it dries quickly leaving what looks like a rock hard glossy finish. Holds up for 2 or 3 years before it needs re-doing. Good Luck Bob Knott H380

Teak

Hi Jack, Congratulations on your new boat! I side with Bob and your girlfriend on this one. I use WM golden teak oil on the cabinetry usually a couple of times a year, especially in the area around and below the companionway, as the wood really takes a beating from the sun here in FL. Enjoy!!! Paul Bednarzyk S/V Knot Again

Regular Use

In addition to what has been advised, our yard manager suggested that we oil the teak that is subject to UV (such as steps, companionway hatch trim, etc) on a regular basis to protect it.
