I have a 1984 H37 cutter which I bought new in Houston and now have on the West Coast. I still have the original halyards but they are not going to make it through this summer. I am currently in Papua New Guinea but will be returning to the Seattle area in August. Before then I would like to order all new halyards; main, staysail and jib. I do not have the halyard size or length. I do have the specs off the Hunter form which gives me the sail size but not the halyard length. Could anyone who is near their boat tell me what size to order and what length for each halyard? Also a recomendation of a brand name would help. I will probably just order them through West Marine complete with new hanks and have them delivered to my house. Any recommendations would be gratefully received. Thanks. Fair winds. Don

Problem with. . .

West Marine pre-spliced halyards is size. You need a 7/16" rope but the WM pre-spliced is only 110 feet in length. That works for my H37C but my halyards terminate at the mast. I imagine that your '84 lines go to the cockpit. It is very close, 45' up and back down leaves 20 feet. You could call WM and ask about a custom size, 7/16 x 120 of Sta-Set X(New England Rope) - 1-800-BOATING Be sure to buy five halyards. Main, jib, spinnaker, and a spare to use all four sheaves at the top. I use the spare to control the topping lift. The 110' length is good for anything that stays at the mast. For the staysail halyard use the 3/8" by 90'.

Thanks Ed

Ed, thanks for the reply. I tried to answer you yesterday but for some reason my reply did not appear in the form. My halyards are at the mast and not the cockpit so I will go with the West Marine 7/16th x 110' for the jib and main. Right now all the halyards are the same but I agree with you that there is no need for 7/16th on the staysail. The 3/8ths x 90 should do it nicely. I do not have a spinnaker as I usually sail by myself. I was considering buying a drifter and planned on using the jib halyard for that. I am still using the original Cruising Design roller furler that has an internal hayrad so the jib halyard is available. I know the roller furler will die one of these years so I should have an extra to cover a future roller furler without an internal halyard. Ed I thank you for the reply. You are a definite asset to the Hunter Form. Fair winds Don

If I could recommend to you.... think about a smaller diameter line than 7/16". There are better quality lines that are stronger and stretch far less than the 7/16" double braid and are also far more chaef(sp) resistant. I use 3/8" spectra on my boat and it makes a world of difference.

Thanks

Alan Thanks for the information and recommendation. I will check it out. I am not sure of the smaller line although I am sure it is strong enough. I actually like the "feel" of a thicker line but cost and efficiency also play a part. I will check it out and let you know. Again, thanks. Don
