I intend to race this H 34 and only have one set of winches(in the secondary position)and want to buy a set of new STs for the genoa work. I have heard ALOT of opinions about what size these should be. Please help if you have any experience or knowledge of this upgrade. Thank You, JLGJR

Probably Larger

During the 80s Hunter tended to undersize the primaries. Our H-35 came with 24s and they were replaced with Lewmar 43s which, by the way, the H-35.5 came with as standard. The primaries need to be sized according to the headsail size and one can get recommended winch sizes easily by going to, say, a Lewmar equipment catalog or looking in a West Marine catalog. That is how I did it (plus talking to people) and came up with the 43s. The 43s are much easier to use than the OEM 24s. The 24s were moved aft for secondaries. When mounting the new winches you'll have to drill new holes. Hunter has an aluminum plate embedded in the fiberglass. When tapping, and probably drilling, into aluminum it is best to use a tapping oil designed just for aluminum otherwise the tap will wear out in no time, and maybe even break off. Plug the old holes with epoxy. When centering the new winches for mounting make sure there is enough room between the winch and the side of the winch pad for a line otherwise it could get jammed. Bigger winches are nice!

Stripper Location

One more thing, when you install the winch the stripper (the part that takes the line out of the self tailer) should face the person running the winch.

Sell me your old winches?

What make and model are the old winches that you are considering replacing? I have a 1986 Hunter 31 with Maxwell winches, and getting parts is nearly impossible. If they are the same on the 34, I would be interested in buying one or both for parts.

Winches

Ken, thanx for the response.I am not replacing any, I'm adding primaries because the maxwell 24s are too small and will be kept for secondaries. I do have a pair of lewmar 2 speed 40s for sale if you are interested. the lemars dont fit the same holes, and im weird like that

Same holes?

If you want bigger winches, you will have to drill new holes, "period". I put a pair of Anderson 40's on my H-31 and they are superior to Harken. Just buy the right size tap and drill and use a good cutting and tapping spray such as, "Energy Release" about $10. I put the tap in my 12V. electric drill on slow speed, and it worked great. Don't try and tap all the way threw on the first try, bring the tap out and spray the particules of aluminum off the tap and then insert the tap again and finish. The drill makes the job easy and fast.
