H 34 Ball Valves

Hi there, Im in the middle of replacing thru hulls and I was wondering if I could get some feedback on what to use to seal the ball valves to the thru hull fittings? I was told that Master Plumber thread seal paste was good but I also was told that teflon tape was the one to use. I am not familiar with teflon tape on such a large surface as a ball valve and a little worried if i use the tape and use too much will it untangle as I am screwing on the valve? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, CR

Use both. Make sure your threads are compatible.

Thru hulls have straight threads and ball valves have tapered. Are you not using bronze flanged seacocks? I hope those ball valves are not brass.

I won't get into the matching and mismatching of threads but as far as sealants go, don't rely on teflon tape alone. It's hit and miss as far as "cold applications go". It's best used on hot applications. Remember that teflon tape's claim to fame is its neatness compared to liquid sealants.

If you're looking for the best seal possible, apply teflon tape first and then a thin film of Permatex 2 on top of the threads. Be sure to apply the tape to the threads in a clockwise direction.

I use bronze ball valves. They seem to be straight threads with teflon tape. No leaks in 5 years
