I have a 1999 Hunter 260 with a pressurized water system. This week I purged out the antifreeze from the system - filled it with fresh water and ran the tank dry - then refilled it. All is good except that the system continually 'spits' air. I am getting flow from the pump to the filter. All lines seem to be tight (but I have not taken a screwdriver to the clamps yet).

My questions are:

1) Ideas on the cause of the spitting.
2) (Really a basic question) ... do you leave your pump on continually? It's supposed to shut off when pressure builds up - right?
3) The filter - just down stream from the pump ... is this supposed to be cleaned? There's a small threaded connection at the bottom of the filter - is this for bleeding the system?
4) How do you bleed the air out of the system? I'm thinking that's what's causing the spitting.

I apologize for the basic nature of these questions - I looked in the archives and saw references to bleeding the system; to cleaning the filter, etc. I have no documentation on any of these procedures - hence this post.

pump spitting

  1. Last spring my pump was spitting and it was because it had enough water in it to freeze and it was ruined.
  2. Yes, the water pump is left on and once the pressure builds with the faucet off, it stops running. But, since mine was cracked it couldn't build the pressure and kept running.
  3. Don't know.
  4. Mine bleeds out the air on its own.

Solution

John,

Thanks for the reply.

My solution to the spitting issue was to go in and re-tighten ALL the connectors from the tank to the pump. Turns out when I winterized my system last fall one connection was not tight (wasn't loose either - but could be tightened some more). I did this; ran both faucets for about three minutes and the spitting stopped AND the pump turned off.

Learned another aspect of boat maintenance.

Again thanks for the reply.
