I am ready to order a backup rudder for my 260. Planning a couple of big trips this summer (FL Keys and Grand Teton National Park) and I'd hate to drive 2000 miles and see the rudder sheer off the first time I hit a manatee.. ;-) I hear a lot about a 369 dollar IDA SAILOR rudder but can't find the right model to order. It looks like the H240 has a similar rudder that's shorter (48" ?) is that the one that works for the 260??? If ya'll have some feedback on this it would be highly appreciated. A.

Ida Sailor rudder

I bought the H260 48" rudder 3 years ago and it works great. At one time they marketed a 52" rudder for the H260, although I don't see it on the IDA Sailor website today. I suspect that the 48" H240 rudder will fit a H260, but best to call Joel at IDA Sailor to confirm.

Ida's original rudder

I believe the rudder that you mention is the one that Ida originally marketed for the 260. It is shorter than the Hunter original but many people have found it to be satisfactory.

ida sailor rudder - they are great!!

I sail mostly in the lakes of Tennessse....when I sailed on the east coast this summer, my factory rudder split the first time out in the Charleston Harbor. With my sailing trip shortened, I returned home and talked with the people at Ida Sailor and they suggested I go with the 48" which is shorter than the factory rudder. They quickly shipped me the 48" rudder. I am very pleased with it's performance, the boat steers better and it appears to be virtually indestructable. For what it is worth, I highly recommend Ida Sailor rudders as a replacement or as a back up rudder. (sounds like i own the company, but no....I am just a very satisfied customer!!)Hope this helps!

Care with Ida Sailor Rudder

I purchased a rudder for an 18' racing dingy and thought the rudder was great the first time out. Then I left the cover off the boat and the rudder in the cockpit - for two days. The rudder twisted and bowed enough to be unusable. Their suggestion was to bow back into shape with weights and two blocks left in the sun to heat up. I did it for 4 hours and it worked, but what good is it if I can not have it in the sun - I live in AZ. It goes with me to big regattas just in case as a backup now. I always cover rudders on my trailer sailors so they would not split from the sun baking them.
