Have a small problem with my topping lift. It's too short. Although it's long enough to attach to the end of the boom, it isn't long enough to slacken/ease when sailing. Does anyone know if I can detach it after raising main sail and re-attach before lowering the main? What purpose does the topping serve other that holding the end of the boom up? Does it help shape the sail? If it's not attached, what takes the load... the sail? I've read that it's supposed to have about a foot of slack in it while sailing. Appreciate any comments

detach

When I sail, my topping lift is slack. So, you can detach yours if it is too short allow the boom to hang in its natural position. Just don't dont forget to reattach it before dropping the main or someone in the cockpit might learn why its called a "boom". Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

topping lift

It can be used to adjust sail shape in very light winds by raising the boom about 10 degrees but by and large it has no value when the main is up.Consider a Boom Kicker and get rid of the problem.
