I am trying to improve the mast raising lowering system for a hunter 23, 1988, by getting a block and tackle system to use with a crutch i have to afix to the rudder to hold the mast up or lower it using the jib sheet. my question is what is the distance i need to have the pulleys run? If i use two two block pullies how long should the line be? I think the total length of the line would be four times the distance the blocks will travel? or is it 5 x s taking into account the last dead line affixed to the pulley?

I had a Mac 26 with the "gin" pole and tackle. With the mast connected to the step and resting on the crutch the gin pole had less than 90* to the mast, the gin pole was 4 1/2 ft long and had 4-part tackle with enough line to be led to the winches on the cabin top. One person up or down no problem. 4-part tackle line is 4 times the distance from the gin pole to the deck attachment plus enough tail to reach your winches with a fair lead.

Line Lenght - 150 feet
I have a 1984 Hunter 25.5. I use 1/2" line that is 150 feet and there are 4 sheeves in the blocks - so there are 4 lenghts of the line. I use the jib sheet and connect to the block near the spreaders. I have designed and developed this methode. I also steady the mast with two lines connected to just below the spreaders to the foot rail on either side. I use the wench to pull the line. wrote the book on mast raising. When anyone tells you a single person can raise the mast, then there are several items that would be needed. Mast raising should incorporate a means of raising the mast but also a means of stabilizing the mast sideways. The gentleman with the Mac 26 would have side stabilizer wires on that boat. Please make sure you have some form of stabilizing that mast from going sideways if by yourself.
