H-216 Trailer Lights and Bunks

Lights: When my 216 was delivered, the trailer wiring was hosed! I'm not sure why it didn't short out the lights on the delivery truck! Luckily my brother-in-law had just given me a set of LED trailer lights for my other boat so I switched the factory lights with the new ones. Glad I did. I found two crimp connections on the wiring on each side. This is probably OK for a few years but I've hauled trailers enough to know that the connections are just itching to corrode and fail. The new LED lights are pretty nice. I judge this to be a worthwhile investment. I've done enough of the "hitch up the lights and check to see if they are working". I'd rather have a really good set and good wiring and simply plug them in and go. Bunks: As far as I can tell, my trailer bunks were adjusted to factory specs when I got my boat. Regardless, the boat was riding on the keel. You could actually rock the boat on the keel. One of the housing cross pieces was bent where the keel was jamming into it. Also the keel has a pretty good notch. I tweaked and tweaked until I was reasonably satisfied with the results. I build a 3/8" spacer for the rear bunk support. I floated the boat and installed the spacer (with longer bolts of course) and raised the bow support to the max position. I guessed on the center bunk support. Once home, on each side I released the center bunk support, stuck a jack under it, then jacked it up until it seem to just start taking the weight. I'm pretty sure I've suffered some reasonable damage to my boat throughout all this. The lower edge of the cuddy entrance is bowed up and I have a traveling and widening crack. I also have cracks on the cockpit sole on each side right up against the cuddy entrance. The port crack is actually a "pimple" that popped up with cracks in the pimple. Feel free to share your experiences and give me any ideas about what I can do. I'm afraid I have delamination of the hull. I just sent an email to Hunter so I'll see what they have to say.

trailer modifications

There is an easy fix for you. Order a new cross brace and two upright bars to support the bunk board along with hardware to attach the supports to the cross brace and bunk boards. Put the new support forward on the trailer right where the frame starts to bend toward the tongue. Attach. You will need to buy longer treated lumber and carpet for the job. What this will do is center the boat coming up onto the trailer. There is no chance of the bow sriking any portion of the front of the trailer thus eliminating the forward board. The boat sits alot better onto the trailer. Done that and been there with the first 216. Ranger Paul, you do not know me but these folks on the website will tell you I know my stuff.

Trailer Modifications

Crazy Dave - You wouldn't have a picture by chance? Where did you order the new cross brace and bunk supports? I guess I can't quite visualize the modification you made but I would sure like to do it.

H-216 Trailer Mods - Crud! Figured it out

Crazy Dave: The wheel is still turning but the hamster is almost dead! I figured out what you are talking about and it makes total sense and I want to do it. In fact, I now recall your post about the same subject from some time ago. My Hunter dealer refuses to do business with me after his salesperson's boys worked on my boat and jackknifed my trailer ruining my surge brakes ultimately causing my truck engine to burn up because of dragging brakes! Anyhow, I have requested a dealer list from Venture and I hope I get it. They ignored my request for dealers other than Nelson Marine in Alameda the last time I contacted them. Thanks your your time and kind attention to this matter.

bilateral cracks

There is a similar crack on the other side also (see pict). They are not just superficial, but don't go all the way through. It almost looks like the kind of crack that would form when a too thick layer of material dries???? My boat is used when I bought it so I don't know the origin/duration of cracks.
