Thanks to everyone for your input and suggestions. I received all sorts of advice and criticism. Gues my biggest heartburn, being the novice that I am. is that the Strictly Sail boat store owner told me that the thing wouldn't flip, muchless turtle. Now he tells me that all I need to do is step up to a fixed keel and noooo problem. Very disappointed to have just paid over $10k for a brand new boat and motor(now ruined)that I now must trade.

capsize

I have a very nice h 23, that would be much less likely to capsize, there is something here about this, and I would have sold it to you less than the price of the new h 17(tenK)??? , I am not far away either, Mike

Sounds like you've got a little rocket there...

Rich, I think I understand your frustrations with the boat. The specs say you have 150 sq ft of sail on a 480 lbs boat. Just for comparison, my H19 has 165 sq ft and weighs in at 2100 lbs with the ballast tank full. I know there are plenty of times I've reefed the main because of the excitement level!! We used to have a Precision 14 that flew in 10 knot winds, and it took a few screaming runs across the lake to get used to that. After the first year, we didn't want to go out if the wind was UNDER 10. Are you a member of the club there at Rocky Fork? Even if not, I'm sure you could find a member or two who would enjoy spending an hour or so sailing your new boat with you. Turn the helm over to one of the local racers and see what that boat is really made of!! After a few days of this I bet you'll be having the time of your life. As for the motor, unless you've left it on the bottom somewhere I bet it can be salvaged. Those things are made to taking a beating. Good luck and if you're still upset with Bob, take him out and see if you can dunk him. That should make him fess up about how he really feels about the 170.

Do not throw in the towel!!

Get some help if you can and stick with this boat. Better yet, try to get something simple and forgiving with one sail, like a Sunfish or Phantom. They are very cheap, you may even be able to borrow one. Try to stay away from the performance boats like Lasers and Force V's. Once you have mastered the simple boat, go back to your H170. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. You will also be surprised when you step up to a keelboat, because things won't seem to happen as fast and you can really relax. Many keelboat racers go back to small boats from time to time to fine-tune their skills. IMHO, your dealer is just trying to sell boats, which is OK. Just remember what his priorities are and take anything he tells you with a grain of salt. Good luck!! Peter

Agree

Don't throw in the towel. Get some reef points put into rhe main and sail it that way for a while. During the dog days you will be glad that you have that much sail. Master this boat and you will be a better sailor for it. Don't worry about the turtle. Think of all the catamarans out there. They have tricks for getting them upright. Talk it out with others and I bet you will be flying around by the end of the summer. There is an old saying posted in barns which wotks here: " You"ve never rode until you"ve been throwd " Happy sailing

Give the Hunter 170 a chance!

It's a great boat. I'm a novice sailor but I haven't been capsized yet in gusty wind. I run a rope along each side of the boat so that I can have something to hang on to to upright the boat, if it capsizes. I also plan to take the H170 to a place where I can safely try to capsize the boat to see how far it will go before its gone completely over. Give the boat a real chance. Luan Vienna, VA

Mast "football"

I just bought the "mast float" directly from Hunter. It cost $50.00 + $6.00 for s&h. It has the Hobie "H" on it as Hunter purchases them from Hobie. It looks huge but so what. I have a new Yamaha motor that I don't want to loose plus other goodies that I carry each time.
