We're about to buy a Gulfstar 37, and want to install a windlass. The foredeck has a hatch that opens up to access the chain locker, and I don't immediately see how to install the windlass. If it goes in the locker, is there space below the locker for the chain? Will I have to glass over the hatch and place the windlass on that? Will it go aft of the hatch and feed into the existing chain locker?
Anyone out there who has solved this problem could help greatly with a few pix and some advice.
After I do it, I promise to post the results.

Well, this isn't much help, but I'll add my two cents.

The Gulfstar 37 we had for years didn't have a hatch - the foredeck was solid forward of the cabin house. The windlass was installed near the front with an all-chain rode that fell into the chain locker below.

Given the deck structure, if you install the windlass aft of the locker I'd suggest reinforcing the deck to take the load out to the hull joint.

Good luck!
