Does anyone know of a FREE site that has forecasts for the Gulf Loop Current? I'm probably looking in the wrong places, but I cant seem to find a site that is not a paid subscription site. I need this info for 'Nice and Easy' who will soon be crossing the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently, not many people know much about it or they would have forewarned me on my trip. It can run as strong as 5 or 6 knots on a normal day. The video clip was taken from a stationary platform approx. 65 miles South of New Orleans ( I think ). You can tell that there was absolutely no wave action (very calm seas) that day by noticing the water is not running up and down the legs and wells. I have found many sites that explain the Gulf Loop Current but not the forecasts. If you dont have a large amount of fuel aboard, you may find yourself sailing backwards in lighter winds.

an ob as good as a fcst

Depends on your timescale, but with ocean currents, an observation may be as good as a forecast. For reliable observations try this link, from the Rosensteil (sp?) School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in Miami. Cheers Rich (jealous of warm wx) in Annapolis
