Some of our spring lines had lain in the water (fresh lake water)for quite a while. Now all slimy and yukky. Anybody have ideas as how to clean? Thanks.

Cleaning lines

Years ago I used to actually scrub my dock/spring lines and rinse them with a hose. It was tedious work. Then I got smart: bought a $100 electric power washer. It will clean a 50-ft line in a matter of minutes. It is also very handy for cleaning the non-skid, cleaning the waterline scum, prepping the bottom prior to painting, and numerous other chores on the boat and at home. Really great investment!

Each year I take my mooring pennant...

...to the hand-spray car wash and clean it off that way. Just don't get too close with the pressure washer. Or if you have access to a pressure washer then you are golden! :)

How about your washing machine ?

I frequently wash my lines at home this way. Throw in a little LIQUID fabric softner, and they come out clean and soft. I have had some instances of the lines comming out kinked, but they easily straighten out. SOme have suggested putting them in a net bag to avoid the kinking Jeff

Front loader washing machine

The best option is to take it all to the local Laundromat. Put it all in a front loader, and it will get all of the sand, grit, mold, growth, out and the line will be nice and soft. Don't use a top loader, since the line will just clog up the center agitator, or wrapped around it. Every few years, I take my haylards and sheets to get them washed. Every spring, I get my dock line washed.

Thanks everybody. Just one thing, drying. Tumble or solar?

Personally

I wouldn't put them in the dryer. Maybe with the machine set to air dry only - no heat. It is nylon.

Let it air dry

No, I would not put it through the dryer. Go ahead and lay it on deck and let it dry in the sun, or just put it back on the riggings. Don't bother with a dryer in air mode only either. It will take forever, and also your lines normally gets wet all the time anyway.
