If I installed two new dual purpose batteries, a group 24 and a group 27, using the old style battery selector switch,(without an automatic charging relay) would there be problem as long as they are both lead acid types?

They have different capacity and therefore different charge needs. If you try charging them together, they will not charge properly as the smaller one will fool the charge sensor into thinking the larger one is full.

invest in a new smart charger, most come in 2-3-4 battery leads so each battery is independently charged, then it makes no difference what size or type batt your charging, most cost less then 200 bucks.

These is no problem, what so ever, using an ACR to do this... This is exactly what they are designed for..

There is no problem doing this without an ACR.

There is no problem as long as the batteries are roughly similar.

Good catch, miss read that. Still, the same answer.

With or without an ACR combing batteries during charging is fine. As long as the charging voltages for each battery, and the type FLA, VRLA AGM, VRLA GEL are the same in each bank they charge without issue.

An ACR is just a machine, contactor/relay doing the same thing a human does by switching to BOTH. A VSR/ACR is just smarter than a human because it never forgets to separate the banks once they are no longer charging and always remembers to combine the for charging. Still the actual result is identical between BOTH and an ACR, they both parallel the banks...
