Grounding plate…..

Is there any reason / benefits to keep a grounding plate? My boat came with an Onan genset that was connected to a grounding plate. This was the only item attached, however due to the a/c ground attached to the genset it would by default attach my entire a/c ground to the plate. Installing a new genset now and this is not required. I pulled the old genset 2 seasons ago and did notice my zincs all lasted the entire season where in previous years the prop zincs needed 1 change.

thanks
Greg

Opinions vary on the efficacy of the grounding plate vs. any metal thruhull. The concept is the provide an effective ground point to dissipate lightning strikes but obviously is an electrical ground too.

The only caution when choosing is to ensure you avoid ground loops which can create electrolysis by virtue of multiple grounds having disparate voltage potential.

Also if the ground plate is of sufficient surface area, it may have been installed for lightening protection. Regardless, the point by Don is sound to make sure you do not create a ground loop.

Thanks guys! As I said, it was only attached to the genset and I have had no issues electrically ever since I have disconnected it. Think I will just sit back and leave it as is and maybe next winter remove it.
