Hunter 40 Legend Penetanguishine ontario
Has anyone done a gross and net tonnage on their 40' Hunter legend 1986? I am trying to register my boat on the Canadian registry and that is a requirement. Have a tonnage survey is 400.00 which I am trying to avoid. Thank you

Here are the USCG instructions, which should also be accepted by the Canadian registry:

Btw...a ship's gross and net tonnage was originally a calculation of how many wine casks it could carry. Casks were called "tuns"..."tunnage" evolved into tonnage. If you search the forums for "ships tonnage" you'll find an entertaining article on the subject that I posted a while back.

So are the mounties going to check your math? I think this falls under the "to the best of my knowledge" rule

For my Bavaria 38E the gross is 16 and the net 14. For your 40 ft I'd add maybe no more than one to each; 17 & 15, respectively, "to the best of my knowledge." Or, if someone here has a USCG documentation on the Hunter 40 it would be printed on the certificate of documentation. In the old days of sailing it was referred to tonnes or tons "burthen."

Do you know what the length of a single tier of deckhouses and or superstructures is on your vessel.?
From start of the superstructure where it slopes up at the companionway doors to the front of the eyebrow over the forward Windows is 14 feet.
