I have a Groco HF that I replaced 2 seasons ago. The first time I tried to use it this season, it refuses to pull in any sea water. The selector handle feels normal, but, with the handle in the vertical position no water is pulled in. It pumps out normally. The intake sea cock is open and there is water available through the intake hose. I'm hoping I can get a clue as to what parts I should have in hand so that when I take it apart I can have what I need rather than having to wait a couple days with it totally out of action.

I Suggest that you contact Patrick, Groco's Marine Toilet expert. He knows his stuff! and helped me rebuild my HF Head this spring.

Gotta be one of two things...

I'd bet money the toilet spent the winter with the wet/dry lever in the dry mode...that will put a pucker in the flapper valve at the top of the pump--part #10 on the drawing here : http://www.groco.net/SVC-MAN-07/Sec1/pdfs/HF.pdf --that'll prevent it from bringing in any flush water. Replace the flapper valve. I dunno why toilet mfrs never mention that toilets shouldn't be left in the dry mode for long term layup, but they never do.

If that's not it, the only other possibility is a failed wet/dry cam (part #5)...the lever swings the cam to block the flow of flush water in the dry mode, open it to let flush water pass through in the wet mode. If the lever isn't moving the cam to unblock the intake, that would also cause your problem. VERY common in Jabsco manual toilets...rare in a Groco HF. So my money is on the flapper valve.

While you have it apart, replace the joker valve. That should be done EVERY year to keep your toilet working as it should.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll pull it apart tomorrow. The Ship's Store at my marina has both parts in stock (flapper and joker). I don't think they have the cam. If I need that, I'll probably have to order it.

What do you recommend for lubricant? I think you suggested Teflon, but any specific brand?

SuperLube is best

SuperLube makes a variety of lubricants...you want to be sure to get the thick grease in a tube. It comes and goes on the Ace Hardware site...seems to remain on this one:

Same grease is also the right one to use on winches, seacocks, y-valves and anything else that's wet a lot of the time.

You will have to order a cam assembly from Groco. Nobody stocks one of those.
