We consider to buy genneker for our huntrr 33. Any recommendations?
I have a 2006 H33 and I bought a North Sails G-AP3 gennaker, but have to say that I am disappointed with the result.

I think it's because of the fractional rig of the H33 causes the mast to be so far forward that the mainsail keeps the gennaker protected from the wind. There is one VERY narrow wind angle (about 135 degrees effective wind) where the gennaker will stay filled. Also the fractional rig causes the gennaker halyard to exit the mast just above the forestay - ie not from the top of the mast- so the total area of the gennaker is a LOT less than it would otherwise be.

It is not clear to me that flying the gennaker gives better performance than the jib poled out wing-on-wing.

My bottom line is that, although I love my H33 overall, the fractional rig has pluses & minuses, and flying a gennaker is definitely a minus in this regard.

sorry!

That is why boats like J/Boats have sprits, to get the asymmetrical spinnaker forward and away from the mainsail. You might want to think about buying a deck mounted sprit for this purpose as made by Selden (the Furlex people). Gennekers (which I believe is a North Sails moniker), cannot perform when sailing deep between a run or broad reaching like a symmetrical kite with a pole does, so you gybe downwind, which is faster and more efficient than going dead down wind anyway.

I used the North Sails G-ap2 instead of the G-ap3. Here is the statement from North when I was searching for the sail.

"Note that this is a G-ap2 instead of the previous G-ap3. The 2 is a wider sail and with the smaller fore triangle this will make for a more appropriate sail area."

I don't use it a lot but I am happy with it. The main sail does tend to block it when running so it is easier to leave the main furled.

Hi, Jake - very interested in your experience. Do you know the specs of the G-ap2? The specs of my ap3 are:

Gennaker North Sail G-AP3 11meter Luff SP
SLE 9.35M, SLU 10.97M, Foot 5.50M, SMG 5.30M.

When you furl the mainsail & use gennaker alone, how does the performance compare with main & jib poled out?

Here are the specs off the quote:

Hunter 33 2004
P: 41.00
E: 14.58
I: 37.42 ISP: .00
J: 10.83 SPL: .00

Which are the standard dimensions that I gave to North.

Quote Item(s) Cloth Area

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

G-AP2 Gennaker Norlon 75 668 sq. ft.
Conditions: Max Apparent Wind Speed - 15 Knots

I did not receive specific dimensions of the actual sail other than the area.

The boat speed is higher using the gennaker alone over the main and jib when running. I do not have a pole. I really will only use it up to about 10 knots of wind as the boss gets a little rattled. On more of a broad reach I can get the main out and on a beam reach in light winds the boat will really perform.

As you probably already know the H33 is poor in light winds because it cannot fly a genoa due to the rig configuration.
Thus to get any light wind perfomance from anything between 50 deg apparent and up your bum you need an assym spinnaker. However you need to get a selden retractablle bowsprit or similar to get it out of the way of the ms. I have the standard sail from the hunter owners shop and it works well with this other tackle. For top downwind performance you should also fly the headsail on the other side.
