Green stuff

I keep the boat in salt water. The galley sink drain through hull fitting has "green stuff" covering most of the through hull, and the lever to open and shut this through hull fitting does not move. No water is visible running out of the through hull fitting, but I suppose seepage is possible. What is the "green stuff," how do you treat it, and how do you get the lever moving? Appreciate the help.

Depends on what it is made of. If it is made of copper, that green stuff is corrosion just like the Statue of Liberty. If it is so badly corroded that it doesnt open any longer then you can only remove it and replace it to make it better. If it is stainless steel then it is probably some kind of growth. Try cleaning it out.

Also important to use your thru hulls at least every few months. By that I mean open and close them. This helps to prevent sticking. The green stuff is corrosion. Not a major problem. Can be cleaned with elbow grease.
