Our 340 was broken into on the first night we launched her! I had gone home, but my husband slept aboard that night. At 5:00 am he locked up and went to get coffee. When he returned a few hrs later someone had cut the hasp (latch) on the lock, threw hatchboards overboard, got in and took the GPS, binoculars, CD player (thank goodness his laptop wasn't on board yet!)a camera, cordless drill and set off a fire extinguisher inside. What a mess, but at least there were no cut cushions or anything that was not cleanable. Anyone have any ideas on theft-prevention? Maybe a bit after the fact :-(

Did all this happen in a marina? Where were the neighbors, dock attendants, security?

Sorry to hear about that...

Someone broke into my 340 a while back too. They stole everything of any conceivable value including all the built in nav electronics, inflatable PFDs, etc. This was overnight in a busy marina with a lock on the hatch. It really sucks but I'm afraid there isn't much you can do. Some people have tried alarm systems but I think that might just end up being annoying and ineffective. The marina people try to provide "security" but let's face it, a marina is pretty much wide open even with keyed entrys. Easy to just row up in dink if someone won't hold the door open for you... Sad to say but probably the best thing would be getting a low deductable on your insurance that way you won't have to pay as much if/when it happens again. By the way, your homeowners policy may cover the items if your boat policy doesn't, worth checking... Or you could get a mean Rottwieller and keep him below decks ;.) My condolences, try not to let it spoil all the fun you can have...

I installed a deadbolt lock in the top hatch cover of my 410. Won't keep anyone serious about getting on the boat, off, but keeps the basically honest people honest. At least it takes more than a simple bolt cutter to get in. Bryce

Punks!!!

Some gutless punks HAD to be watching him for that to happen so soon after he left. I'd seriously consider moving my boat to a more secure marina. We've been in 3 different marinas on our lake and knock-on-teak, have never had a problem. One consideration is to not leave too much on the boat and don't make it too difficult to break into (minimizes damage)...we all know that locks are to keep honest people honest. The "punks" will always get in if they want to! Sorry to hear your season started out so poorly...don't let it get you down.

Big Dog and move to a secured marina

My sympathy . . . But at least you've added to my reasons why I live where I live.

I agree with Marc Honey, sounds like an "inside" job. I would keep a close eye on the marina staff and the staff of the dealer that delivered the boat.

To all who responded

Thanks to all of you who wrote back. It's nice to know people care about other's problems. To answer some questions, our boat is located in a usually quite harbor (about 1/2 mile wide) with no marina around unfortunately. We've been there 12 years with no problems. Our problem is that we bought a NEW boat! Also it is too early in the season and hardly anyone is around right now. We were just "sittin' pretty". I guess there really is no way to keep dirtbags out and you're right, the bigger the lock, the bigger the damage! Our homeowners policy has a $500 deductible, so in this case the boat policy's deductible is only $250. It's just a shame that with all the years you pay on insurance it will probably wind up that we still have to pay more. If we left our little cocker spaniel on guard, she would probably love to show new people around our new boat while we're gone! We won't let it ruin our season, but I'll tell you, I look at everyone and wonder......hmmm

How to Catch Thieves on Video

To the article labelled "Great Way to Start a Season". We supply minature cameras with transmitters built in. This transmitts the video and audio to your house or office. A 12 volt hidden VCR is also possible. A motion sensing InfraRed sensor switches on the VCR. Then Just call police and have the thieves arrested. If they are left free these problems will escalate. All the best, Sacha www.innovation2000.org
