Hunter 170 Ventura, California
Friday, the "day after" when we all were carrying that exra turkey ballast around, four members of the Hunter daysailors of Southern California Association got together for a most enjoyable day of sailing off Ventura California. Brian, Steve, and myself were sailing on Brian's Hunter 23, Dennis and his guest was sailing on Dennis's Hunter 216. Bright sunny clear day with a temperatures around 67 degrees and gentle winds 10-15 helped make this a great sailing day. the sea was gentle with an occasional 6 to 8 foot swell. no white caps There must have been 40 plus sail boats out, all of different sizes and shapes while the marina area host a variety of small sail boats, jet skiers, ect. After sailing along the California cost for few hours we met back at the docks, pulled the boats out and finished the day off by having fish and chips at Andrea's while at the marina. Happy Thanks Giving Glenn

wow

GENTLE EIGHT FOOT SWELLS!!!! Wow. I guess the water I sail is more protected than I thought! The last week has been exceptionally warm here in SE Michigan. I thought about going sailing yesterday myself. It would have taken me a bit of effort to launch because I already put the boat away for the winter, besides, unusually warm days in November are for yard work and hanging up the christmas decorations. Thanks for the post, and keep 'em coming, It helps me make it until spring. John

Not fair, just not fair!

Glenn, That sounds absolutely wonderful! It's just not fair that we all couldn't go. :( Sounds like Brian really likes his 23. Someday I'll find the right opportunity and move to Southern California, but till then keep the warm thoughts coming this way for us chilly Ohioans. JerryA

Ohio !

Hi Jerry, I was born in Akron.........my parents had enough sence to move to southern California 6 months after I was born, I have only been back to Akron once as a small boy, I went sleding down the soap box derby hill, I think I must have been about 9 then, long time ago :-( The sailing alone is a good reason to move to southern California ! I guess now is the time the folks on the east cost pull out all the sailing magazines and read them. Season greetings, Glenn

For every season....

Sounds fantastic!!! Here in New England we;ve had 60's, and even a day in the 70's! My 146 is up on blocks, though, and so is my sailing psyche... I guess it comes from living in New England, you work with the seasons, and there really are things to do in each one. Putting the garden to bed, painting, splitting firewood, building a garden shed, traveling... Hmm...have I convinced myself yet????? ;) But really, I don't miss it, cause there's so much else to do. Though when I head to San Diego this January, maybe I'll look you up - cann you still sail in Jan???

Yes !

Hi Tereza' The Hunter Daysailor Association of Southern Calif. has a member who sails a 170 out of Mission Bay and I'm sure you can catch a ride. Let us know and may be I will bring my boat down too. We did have a person (Keith) from Saint Louis sail with us out of Ventura, he was there for a week so we took him out for about 3 hrs, had fish and chips to end the day. We sail at Mission Bay San Diego, Los Alimitos Bay, Long Beach and Ventura So.......any one interested let us know. Of course, it does depend on the weather, we do get a few bad days here despite what you might here ! Glenn

January Sailing

Glenn / Tereza - Let me know if you guys are interested in going for a sail this Jan in San Diego. I sail my 170 in Mission Bay (next to Sea World) nearly every weekend. Glenn - maybe we could round up some of the HDASC members. If the swells aren't too big we could even leave the protected waters of the bay and sail down to San Diego Bay or Coronado Island. Tereza - to answer your question, you can sail comfortably year round in San Diego. Temps in Jan should run in the mid/high 60's to mid 70's - wind breaker, max. Bryan

Wow - what an offer!! Let me check my dates!! Are you THE Bryan of Bull Mastiff fame? Will he come along?? That is a great offer - thanks. Would be fun if things could come together for such a sail.

Not my hound

Tereza ~ You're thinking of Danny in our sailing club. He's got the mastiff. My beasts, a boxer and boston terrier, prefer to stay on terra firma. They're not the strongest of swimmers, and although I haven't accidentally capsized the boat yet, from reading the forum's archives, it sounds like it will inevitably happen. Keep me in mind if your schedule in SD allows for a sail. Bryan
