Gordon, thanks for the great tip on a hard starting YSE12. I was ready to make an anchor out of it. All I did was tweek the spindle on the pump about one eighth of a turn and it started right up. Such a simple fix. You just have to know what to do. Many thanks. Now it occasionly accellerates to the maximum on it's own. Scary! Any thoughts on that? Maybe I need to tighten just a touch more. Thanks again. Ian

Runaway

The early Yanmars would sometimes runaway when they started running on their crankcase oil. This was usually traced to excessive oil in the engine and sometimes to motersailing in heavy seas. If your engine took off by itself, check the dip stick. You should be at or below the full mark, never above. The best level is 1/4" below or slightly lower.
