This site is being put together specifically for sailors and you can go directly from it to Active Captain. Don't know about Active Captain? You should if you are traveling out of your home waters.

http://www.activecaptain.com/

There are some things in the tide presentation that didn't quite make sense to me one a quick look but the newsletter email I got from Active Captain say that Weather Underground is actively seeking comments and suggestions.

My primary weather site has been:

http://www.intellicast.com/Local/WxMap.aspx?location=USCT0094&weather=hdRadarSmoothPaletteA

from which you can click to an hour by hour forecast for the next three days.

the tide site I have liked best is:

http://www.ezfshn.com/tides/usa/mai...s?regionID=92&regionProductID=30&timeoffset=1

I think this new site might supplant those but time and clicking will tell.

Good note, Roger.. Weather Underground has been my go-to for tropical info; I think they have had a better, more quickly updated presentation than Intellicast .. I got notice from Active Captain about their new relationship and was really pleased with the site.. Sailflow and WindFinder both are great for wind forecasts.. We are on watch now to see if Issac moves more westward .. going to be tight for the next few days..

For what it's worth ...
Ever since "Stormpulse" went to being a (a rather pricy) paid service,
I've been using Mike's Weather Page ... http://spaghettimodels.com/
for tropical ( and other) info. Nice assemblage of various sites.

Thanks for discussion of weather site. Every time we have such discussion I think I learn something. Maybe due to age I just have forgotten.

I am familiar with some threads on this web site about getting Wifi or internet access while sailing near shore.

Anybody using special gear or antennas? If so what?

Gee, may be Roger will be able to post off Nova Scotia?

I use a Verizon MiFi, a little box that talks to the cell phone network and becomes a WiFi hot spot for up to 5 computers. Canada adds a bit onto the data charges so I didn't use it there as much as I wanted but I've never gone over half my allowance in the states.

South of Maine, I only found one place that I couldn't connect on the ICW. There were a couple where it was so slow I gave up on the Internet but could still get email in and out.

I use NOAA. Excepting privately owned Radars by local news stations, all Radars, AWOS, weather satellites, weather balloons sent aloft, weather observational Aircraft, etc, are all Govt owned and report directly to the National Weather Forecast Center in Norman Ok., operated by NOAA, who have the largest computers available to take all that data they have at their disposal to build a forecast.

All other weather sources, CNN, Weather Channel, Wunderground, etc., get their information directly and only from NOAA. I do understand that NOAA's website can be daunting, and its always changing making it a continual challenge, but it is "the" primary source where it all comes from. In addition, NOAA weather synopsis is always available by radio, as are AWOS stations, which are also available by phone. What I mean is, you can call any AWOS station in the country and hear the present local conditions 24/7, which are updated every minute. And its all freely available to the public.

I use this as well throughout the Chesapeake Bay - only dead spot I've found is near Bloody Point..... data allowance is more than adequate for weather, navigation and email. Also have a mobile GPS attached to my lap top.

Try Windguru.com. i have been using it for years. In the Caribbean as well as in the states.
has been very accurate. It grabs all the others and puts them into one. A whole week, wind direction and strength, wave height and direction, wave period, water temperature.
Enter area, country, will give you choices both in meters and feet.
