Great Day! How do I point higher?

Wow, great day in Jacksonville today, 15-20 mph winds from the east. First time Wife and I have wandered out in that weather. We reefed the main, and pulled out about half the 110 jib and our H22 kept her feet just fine. We kept the heel to about 15 degrees with only a venture or two into the 20's. (Did hit 30 on one puff and we thought it was great!) Now the question: I couldn't point the darned boat any higher than what I'm guessing was 55 degrees to the wind. With the marina due up wind, it made getting back almost impossible for us and we had to fire up the Evinurude. The tide was running straight at us as well which made it interesting. I'm thinking that if I had put up more sail I could have pointed higher and sailed in, but then we'd have been heeling like those guys we saw with a rail in the water. That looked fun, but not for us yet! Thanks for any tips. David (Sea Monkeys)

Adjust the traveler...

Hi David, I used to have a H22, although mine was a fixed keel model which I understand points a little higher than the centerboard model. At any rate, I found it useful to adjust the mainsheet traveler to windward (push it toward the side the wind is blowing from). This essentially "tricks" the boat into thinking you've fallen off the wind a little, and gives you the ability to point a few degrees higher. Hope this helps. You've got a great boat there.

I may get myself into trouble here...

...but I think you may have been better off with the full jib, both sails sheeted in hard with halyards tight to flatten the sails as much as possible. That seems to work best for us on our H23. Of course, you have to be ready to trip the main in case of a rogue gust. We're not anywhere NEAR experts on this subject of sail trim, so we check out Don Guilette's forum often to pick up more tips. Check the link below to one the archived threads regarding this very subject. Enjoy! Jim Maroldo s/v: Lil' Wass Ett

Well, tried the traveller

Hey, I did something right then. I moved the traveller to windward and we did point hight some, then promptly dipped a Fender we keep on the port side but forgot to pull up into the drink. It was a great rush. We also had everything sheeted in as tight as a drum. I guess it's just one of those trade offs in heavy wind? Keep her flat or point higher? thanks all David

Same thing in Titusville!

I was out in it on Saturday too, and it was great! Dave, is there a public ramp in St Augustine where I could leave my truck and trailer for a couple of days? The only ramp I've ever seen in St Augustine is the one on A1A by Camachee Island just before you go over the bridge to Vilano Beach, and they didn't allow overnight parking. Peter H23 "Raven"

That's the only one I'm familiar with

Even though I live in St. Augustine my boat's actually in Mandarin on the St. Johns River, it's a pretty good hike for me to get over to the intrcoastal. I took a sailing class at the St. Augustine marina at the foot of the new bridge, I'm thinking maybe you could park your truck there? Don't forget the St. Johns either, it think there are some spots on the west bank with ramps. Very fun sailing up here in the river. Sever H23's at our marina were out the other day too. I launched my 23.5 at the public ramp across from Cammachee Landing in St. Augustine last summer. Left the truck and trailer sitting in the lot for three days and nights. No problem. Sailed the boat over to the City Marina just below the Lions gate Bridge and stayed there for approximately $35 a night. Better view than any of the pricey Bed and Breakfast Inns along the bay. Took a taxi back to pick up the the trailer while my wife motored from the marina back to the ramp. We had absolutely no need for the truck while staying there. everything was within walking distance of the marina. Had a super time. Hope to do it again.

Keyword: FLAT

Your sails need to be as flat as possible, particularly the jib. However, if your sails are a bit old, they have probably stretched and are more rounded. This is one of the reasons the high modulus sails are used in racing, they hold their shape for a longer period of time. I used to have a Capri 18 with another problem: the jib sheet tracks were located way out on the beam, which meant I couldn't point higher than about 55 degrees even with new sails. To flatten your sails, make sure the halyards are pulled tight to the top, pull out your outhaul all the way, and tighten your vang. Fooling around with your jib sheet cars will help too. By the way, flatter sails will induce a little less heel as well.

I've done a couple of schools at St Augustine Sailing right there in Camachee Harbour Marina just north of the bridge. For one school we motored from St Augustine to Jacksonville up the ICW, anchored overnight behind Blount Island then ran down the St Johns past Mayport into the Atlantic and sailed back to St Augustine. There is a LOT of traffic on the lower St Johns, especially big container ships. I can understand why you prefer Mandarin! If all goes well, I'll be in the Mug Race next spring, so I'll wave as we pass by. Peter H23 "Raven"

Will do. I plan to try that race as my first one, it should be fun. D

Pointing

David, you said that you were sailing with the jib reefed. If the jib does not have a foam pad on the luff, then when you reef it, you will get this horrible shape right behind the forestay and the boat WILL NOT POINT. Any sailmaker can put a luff pad on your sail and cure your pointing problem. Good luck.

Thanks Butch, cost?

Thanks for the info, I don't believe I have that setup. About what would it cost me? David

contact your local sailmaker

David, contact your local sailmaker in your area. They'll measure your luff and quote you the foam luff modification.
