Just a note of caution, when I first owned 'Jenavive' I religiously pumped grease into my stern gland every time I visited the boat until I woke up one morning in Swanage to find water over the top of the batteries. Some panic pumping soon reduced the water level and I found that the grease pressure had pushed the gland assembly off the stern tube. I changed to a reservoir of oil which drip fed into the stern gland after that.
For the last 12 years I've used a Volvo boot which works perfectly on one application of grease per year.

Hi Sam,
On our Vega there is a hose connected to the stuffing box that leads into the starboard lazarette. It has a zerk fitting on the end of it so you can grease the box just by lifting the seat and using a grease gun. My problem is the weight of grease to use. I seem to be refilling the box everytime I run the engine. Or maybe I just need more stuffing in the stuffing box? More comments?

Hi all
Assuming the stuffing box is in good repair, how often do you need to grease it? Do you need to take up the cockpit floor each time?
Thanks....
Sam
