The Gray/Pomponette web site sells replacement knobs, but I can't see how to get the damn things off the old ports. Has anybody done this? I replaced 2 more ports... a few of the knobs are good and I want to move them to a port where everything is good but the knobs. Any info would be appreciated.

If the ports are the same as the Gray/Pomponette ports on the 77-83 33 Cherubini...the shaft/bolt part of the knobs are fastened at the base by S/S pins. Get a sturdy nail or rod of the same (or preferably slightly smaller) diameter. Hold the nail/rod against the pin and tap gently with a small hammer to punch the pins out.

Just an FYI

Those knobs and other parts are less money here. http://shop.hunterowners.com/detail.htm?fno=0&group=648&cat=2005

Best Prices on Replacement Hatches

Is right here at sailboatowners.com. This was the best price by a long shot, and they were delivered really quickly. (Of course the company - Gray - is here in Tampa. I bought 2 of them to replace 2 a previous owner had fairly well destroyed. (I have 3 left that are old). Now I want tor move 2 of the knobs from the old ports to an old port. Will try the nail thing. People - if you need new gaskets in your ports, over tightening the dogs will only break the plastic. (Most of my ports were like that.) Gasket material is much cheaper than new ports.

Knobs

If all you need to do is remove knob from shaft be aware, the threads have been "upset" so that knobs will not fall off. Need to "chase" threads with small file or die. Cheap alternative to knobs is 3/8x18 wingnuts. Also shafts can be made up from 3/8x18 bolts [have made several]. Believe originals made this way.

Look at the pins carefully as they are knurled on one end .... make sure that is the end that is taken out first and also that it is end that is put in last ......or otherwise the pins will have a sloppy fit...(if I remember correctly all of the pinds are facing the same way) .. after taking them out ....run a die on the threads to clean them .....the knobs will work smoother.
