I have a Uniden Solara radio. The installation manual says to hook the GPS signal and GPS gnd connections to the radio, while the Garmin GPSMap discusses using NMEA2000 or 0183 networks. I contacted Garmin with the following:
Subject: DSC connection uniden solara
Description: looking for confirmation on connection to non-NMEA DSC radio. Uniden Solara has DC GND, external spkr, and GPS Data IN (GRN), GPS GND (BRN) and NC connections. Because this is non-NMEA, GPS data in and ground on would be what on the GPSMAP? I do not have other connections, so no network currently. What wires would be connected to BRN and GRN on the radio? Only other connection to GPS is depth transducer (Garmin) THANKS!!!

and received:
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'm happy to help you with your GPSMAP 541s. Unfortunately we do not support any connections other than NMEA as they are an industry standard that we can measure and design around. There may be an adapter out there, but we do not have one to offer for this setup.

so....has anyone connected their Garmin directly to the non-network DSC radio? Can I simply use the NMEA 0183 Port (1) Tx and Gnd? Is someone aware of an adaptor? I will be at the boat this weekend to try. Short of that do I need to upgrade the radio?

You are CORRECT: per the Garmin manual, BLK is power AND NMEA0183 GND. I was unsure if GPS Signal was same as NMEA0183, esp since the Garmin connects to everything, incl. XM Radio, Weather Service, Fishfinder, .....! And I can confirm Garmin baud rate, parity.. settings in the Garmin settings menu.

I will report back the results, after this w/e.

Uniden support gave me the wiring confirmation I needed. I will install this weekend.
