They are Great

I have a Garmin 12 and it works nearly as well (within the length of the boat or plane) as any of the fixed ones I have compared them to. If you are not using it to target munitions or to lay out survey lines they are fine. They do eat up alot of batterys so you may want to consider a 12 volt power cord with it. If you have a laptop computer there are all sorts of neat things you can do with them. I would not pay more than $150 for one.

I have a Garmin 48 (About $200). A unit to consider if you want, or need, a U.S. navigation aids database built-in, so you can navigate directly to buoys without entering co-ordinates. It interfaces with PCs so you can pre-plan routes, etc., and has a 12V power cord option, but battery life is quite good. Otherwise any smaller model is fine if you just need lat/long position. information.

gps source and price

Check into Ebay.com and search for gps. There will be lots of good units for sale. GPS is the best thing since white bread. One of the new units like the Garmin III plus with local area cdrom will just about hold you by the hand in a tight spot. Trouble is they're so good that you get dependent fast.

GO GARMIN!

Well, I do live next to the factory and have friends working there, but they build a good unit. Be careful buying a used one since some of the older models really eat battieries. WalMart & Kmart have them on sale occasionally too. Cadillac was giving a Magellan away with a test drive! Be sure to keep a set of fresh alkaline cells stowed for emergency use. Ken S/V Wouff Hong

Garmin 48 - Hard to Beat on the Sea

With all navigational points, all the cities in the world, as well as towns in the US, the ability to upload and download to PCs, its interface with the Delorme's Street Atlas to obtain Long/Lat anywhere in the US makes it tough to beat. Price is right, too.
