I am a new sailor and have been sailing on an inland lake for a little over a year. I am going to start to moving out to the east coast and gulf coast as I get more comfortable and get ASA certified. I am wondering what the best handheld GPS for a beginner to use would be that would contain the information I'd most likely use. Thanks for any help.

Many recommend the Garmin 78 series or even the older 76. As well as being a handheld it is waterproof and floats. Two features that can save a lot of hassles. As a seasoned back country hiker I would stress to you that you should always carry and know how to use a paper chart and compass or other nav. aids before relying on electronic gear. GPS is a fantastic nav. tool no doubt but when the screen goes blank what now?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I am studying the ASA navigation course book and it also emphasizes the paper charts. I hope very soon the GPS will be a backup to "real" navigational abilities
