Has anyone tried to or know how to interface a gps to a lcd computer monitor. some of the new monitors have several places for differen't connections. Sorry I'm not real computer litterate. I am going to put a monitor with tv capabiltys on my boat and if I could without running through the whole computer interface my gps with it. For being able to watch your charts and position. I hate trying to watch the map on that small screen. Where the monitor will be positioned I will be able to watch under sail from behind the wheel. I'm looking at 17 to 19" monitors and will mount it on the bulkhead.

Tim, You will need a CPU. No way around it that

I can think of. From what you say that you are trying to do, you need a PC.

Fred's right (dang...again!)

Tim, many gps units come with a jack and cable to interface to a laptop or other PC thru one of its standard receptacles (COM port usually). The gps unit sends a string of data readings, which the pc converts to a display, or which it feeds into charting software to display your position. That's why you need more than a monitor, i.e., the brains of a cpu in a pc. There may be some gps models that actually send a video signal to a monitor, rather than a data stream. But I'm not aware of any.

Hey Garmin!!!

I wonder if any of the companies that make boat stuff ever bother to look through these postings for new product ideas. If so, how about making a 'docking station' that a GPS would plug into to give you a full size screen? The other fellows were right, I know of no way to 'big screen' a handheld GPS without a CPU in between. But, on a GPS with a built-in chartplotter (like the e-trex Vista) it should be fairly easy for them to come-up with a way to output screen video from the GPS to a larger screen. I have seen that Hummingbird makes a line of sounder/fishfinders that can be interfaced to a number of different brands of GPS units, but I haven't yet found out if it just displays position numbers or if it will actually let you put the full GPS screen onto the screen of the fishfinder. (have to check that out) Garmin outta get a few sailors working in their new product team!!

Make it all wireless

Product designers of all these components should make them wireless using 802.11G or bluetooth technology so we dont have to snake all those wires as well!

Interesting

The idea sounds interesting, but I suspect that they would have to do the output in a television format (which might be fine). Otherwise, monitors are driven by the associated video cards contained in the computer, and integrating additional video output cards into the gps unit might be cumbersome with present technology. Tack Tick is making wireless intsruments

I don't think its a wireless 802.11 standard. I think its some sort of proprietary implementation. http://www.tacktick.com/ Not hooked up for video and GPS yet, but maybe it will start picking up some steam. Check them out at your next boat show.

Only wireless to a point -

You still need a through hull installation for the Tacktick transducer.

Wireless GPS connectivity is already available utilizing Bluetooth. See capjack.com.
