I have an old Magellan GPS 300. It is a secondary but when it worked it was a nice simple hand held & easy to use for basic navigation. It seems to have "quit". Anybody got any leads on getting the old bugger fixed? Could it be that it just needs a new lithium battery? It may be 8 years old.

Obsolete

These things are obsolete when they are a couple of years old. The handhelds are now very reasonable priced, and you can probably buy a new on for less than fixing the one you have. I think you can now buy a basic handheld for around 100 bucks.

is the Magellan repair facility. They will give you a quote to repair it and at the same time upgrade the software to the lastest for that model.

Replace the Battery it's the cheapest way out

I have had two problems with GPSs. The first was a battery problem similar to yours. It was an ICOM made by Panasonic (no longer made), and it just quit working. ICOM wouldn't touch it because it was made by Panasonic and panasonic wouldn't touch it because it carried the ICOM name. The local repair shops wouldn't touch it because (for similar reasons) they couldn't get a schematic. In frustration and with nothing to lose I tackled the job myself, and found the battery buried between two circuit boards, and I replaced it. It has worked fine ever since. My other experience was with my Magellan DX5000, it worked just fine and I had it interfaced with a Digital Beacon Receiver, Radar, Fluxgate Compass, and my Auto Pilot, so I wanted to keep it. Unfortunately the LED screen gradually washed out in the sun to the point that I couldn't read it, and I asked Magellan to repair it. No deal-- They told me to go out and buy another (newer) GPS and I did, but I was so ticked off at them that you can bet that it wasn't a MagellaI ended up with a Standard Horizon WAAS Color GPS/Chartplotter that does everything I need.

E-prom

Back in approx. 2002 there was a necessary Eprom conversion/update necessary to keep the older GPS units updated. You might want to check with an electronics shop who works with GPS units to see if thats whats needed with your unit to get it work. I had an old Magellan unit, had it repaired/updated through a service center provided/listed by WM .... but it only lasted several months after the new Eprom module was installed. Was a total waste of time as the old Magellan unit was obsolete and the 'fix' was a terrible and quickly failed 'band-aid'.
