Hello friends! Do you think an inexpensive GPS, whether hand held or fixed mount offer better or worse accuracy than a more expensive model? Many inexpensive GPS' have less features than a model that costs a few or more than a few dollars more. That difference in price between models can be features such as water resistant or waterproof, internal or external receiving antenna, the ability to easily remote mount an external antenna, size and viewability of the display screen, use of electronic charting chips, color or black and white display just to name a few "features". GPS models are usually purchased according to individual needs and wants. A fixed external antenna is usually the best receiving set up for a boat. One important factor regarding GPS accuracy is satellite geometry. Satellite geometry refers to where the satellites are located relative to each other from the perspective of the GPS receiver. Satellite geometry becomes a factor when using a GPS receiver inside a boat or car, near tall buildings, or in mountainous or canyon areas. When the GPS signals are blocked from several satellites, the relative position of the remaining satellites will determine how accurate the GPS position will be, if there are enough satellites received to have a position determined. Atmospheric and weather effects can also affect accuracy by delaying the propagation (signal speed). How accurate is GPS really? A typical GPS receiver provides 60 to 225 feet accuracy, depending on the satellite geometry and the number of satellites available. This can be improved to fifteen feet or better with the use of DGPS (Differential GPS). DGPS uses a second receiver to compute corrections sent from land base beacons to the GPS measurements. There are many factors which can affect GPS accuracy which are not cost conscience. Use the model which works for best for your vessel and you!

Gps accuracy

It is my understanding that all the GPS models are just as accurate as one another. I have had one for some time and the thing that I wish I had gotten was one with a MAP. To receive my coordinated in Longitude and lattitude is not enough. A MAP in conjunction with cordinates is what my next purchase will be.........

Yes, with proviso

If you are talking about a varriety of consumer level 12 channel units, then there is no quantifiable difference among them in terms of accuracy. The proviso is that differential, WGPS, etc. all add accuracy, but tons of price. I, too, would like a chartplotting unit. Sometime this winter I am going to add a Garmin 175 to my collection of boat crap. At the moment I have a chartplotting software for my PC laptop, but its cumbersome to have the laptop in the cockpit. Can't beat it below, though. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

GPS accuracy

Since the government quit dumbing down the signal, the expected error in position for my Garmin GPS III has typically been from 10 to 20 feet. Thus differential can add little useful to such an accuracy. That this accuracy is in fact real is indicated by the velocity sitting quietly at zero when the boat is at rest. Earlier it was quite disconcerting to see the boat moving according to the gps while the lines were quite secure. Also, a display showing latitude and longitude will sit there not moving for many seconds at a time when the boat is actually tied up. Finally, the bread crum trail the boat makes now on the screen is highly reproducible, with tracks from the slip and tracks in a very narrow channel coming back to the slip reasuringly coinciding. Those things are very very accurate now, just as they come, right out of the box, with just a built in antenna with no expensive differential correction equipment.

One note to add

When buying a GPS make sure your unit recives the maximum number of sats. Most units will have capibilty of receiving up 12 sats. there are units out there who still receive only 5 sats. More sats, more acurate position.
