I have a Garmin GPSMAP 441 that I will be mounting on my 1979 Catalina 27. This unit has a 4 inch screen and will be powered by the boat's battery. I would like to place it on the port side rear rail. I steer by tiller so there is no wheel pedestal. I believe RAM Corp produces a bracket that will fit the rail. I'm looking for advice regarding the ideal mounting location. The unit will be removed when not in use so I am also looking for recommendations for runnning the wire and it's storage. The batteries are also located on the port side.

I sailed on a C27, and the skipper had one mounted on a swing/pivot arrangement, so when in use it swung out from inside the cabin, on about an 18" arm, and was visible in the companionway area while sailing. It was attached by a hinged arrangement. Easy to store/stow. If you are at all handy, a swing/pivot could be made from aluminum or wood. When I get a unit, I plan to make this set-up, but after both new sails.......must wait. Jim Huhta S/V "SEA-130" '79 C27TR Sturgeon Bay, WI

I have a ram mount installed just inside the companionway on my Capri 22. It's basically just below the lip/step. The one I got has 2 arms so I can have it inside or outside the cockpit or swing it completely into the cabin where I can monitor it when we're on the hook. As far as wiring goes, I use the cigarette lighter adapter on my panel though I'll probably permanently wire it to the NAV switch at some point.
