If you don't have an iPad yet, you are better off on an Android tablet.

I do have an iPad and find it terrible in sunlight. I know others may disagree, but the best way to find out for yourself is to go to an Apple store and take a look for yourself...

I've got a Bad Elf GPS dongle that plugs into my iPad2, and Transas' iSailor app. Works okay, but I still haven't dug into all its capabilities.

As was noted, poor vis in direct sun, and the GPS eats the iPad's battery, so I leave it below, plugged in.

Do a search there are many threads on this already.
As many opinions as there are posters.
No point in repeating them over and over

On recommendation by JackDaw, I checked out Skipper and ended up purchasing the app. Use it on a iPhone and iPad, both set up for data plans (no need for an external GPS). Overlays charting on sat photogammetry, really trick stuff. Tide data, wind data...most all the stuff I pay Sirius weather to deliver to my nav. MFD.
