My old GPS MAP210 w/ external antenna has given up the ghost. Looks like all the new models come with internal as well as external antennas now. Looking to see if the internal antenna units work OK through a bimmini.

Internal no problem

I've got a Garmin 492 with internal antenna mounted at the helm under a pretty substantial bimini and have no problem.

I also have a Garmin 492 with an internal antenna. Works fine under Bimini. I have mount set up so that antenna does not point at pedestal guard or Bimini bow but I am not sure if this makes any difference.

Says in the instruction manual that the antenna functions best when the unit is vertical...that would lead me to assume it's a dipole / high gain antenna with some degree of directionality. The garmin term is a "quad helix antenna" and the reciever is an SiRF unit

Hugh, did the 492C come preloaded with the maps for your area or did you have to purchase them?
