GPS info to IPAD

Hi; I'm new to the site and thought this was a good topic to start on. I sail a 26s on the great lakes and use an Ipad for navigation. My Ipad does not have the 4G option, i have an external GPS which talks to my Ipad via Blue Tooth.
This works extremely well. I am using the Canadian charts that I get from iNavX. The GPS is a (DUAL XGPS150) and it cost about $99 Canadian.

Hope this helps.

Well Stu, I understand Jack's sigh. I did a little more than that after some i'net search. I must not know how to search this forum as I input some key words and all that came up was "a line wrapped around a prop"....I've had the same experiences you have except with PCs. The Apple folks used to be pretty good and I've also noticed the apple "kids" are not interested in customer service or knowledge. Actually, that is more prevalent in every day life now days. Obviously, there is still mis understanding out there.....RTFM?? PS maybe I should of searched "all discussions" instead of "ask all sailors"....?
Mark,

I need to apologize to you. My 'sigh' was not directed at you. It was my frustration that people persist in spreading incorrect information regarding this subject for years, and continue to do so. Sorry it seems like I was taking it out on you!

Jackdaw. I happen to have Ipad with GPS and it just great. Are saying you will still get a fix without GPS (and out of wifi and cell range) ?
Yes.

Mark, I apologize, didn't mean to, or hope I didn't sound like I was "aiming" at you.

Searching: about a year or so ago, Phil Herring redesigned and/or improved the search engine on the site. He asked for input. My contribution, and from some others, was to NOT default to any particular discussion group, and that's what he did. That means it searches ALL posts, regardless of where someone might have started. That's also why I suggest that folks use the Show All Forums when they start looking at posts. For example, there's lots of good input from the C310 Group, but they don't show up unless you look specifically there or use the Show All Forums.

This one

Show posts from all forums, all sites

Best regards,

Stu
Stu, no worries. Was not looking down your barrel. I do sympathize with your (and others) views of customer service (putting it mildly) and I discovered what I did wrong with searching. I did not use the "search at the top"....Even with the banner warning... going to fast... I think I decided what I'm going to do. Since this IPAD is going to be purely backup in terms of navigation (I have an E7D and Garmin 76SC handheld), and also used for media purposes on cruises etc, I think I'm going to buy the biggest WiFi model I can afford to load media on and put a separate gps receiver on it later. I am trying to keep current costs down as the Admiral has been very generous with the boat budget this year. New tanks/AIS/autopilot remote/WiFi/alternator/mainsail/new heater next winter...Getting ready for some time in AK. And, after 37 yrs, retire in 4 wks!!!!!!

No problem... I know this has been discussesd at length and my discoveries were frustrating. Now I think I know how to search the forum....

Not likely, the device either has a GPS receiver (its a little radio) or not, the device either has the Wifi or not (a different little radio) and the device has a cellular radio or not (yet another little radio).

If the device has the appropriate hardware, then it becomes a software problem.

As noted Apple maps require the internet, so a GPS fix is supported (worldwide) but unless you are near wifi or a cell network that you can hook up to, the fix can't be displayed on an Apple map.

If you had a set of maps loaded (like open CPN on my subnote) then the fix can be displayed nicely on a map.

The required hardware is a GPS receiver, if that is present then the rest of it is an aps/software problem.

Wow.... I'm glad I have an android... I though Apple stuff was supposed to be intuitive and user friendly.

Quite frankly, it seems that all you need to do is check your location function in the settings menu to determine the presence of a "standalone gps" If it's there.. you can simply download Navionics and the desired maps... the app will ask you to turn the standalone gps on... once done, you're stylin' ... you can navigate independent from cell and wifi service.

Could not agree more. Very frustrating when the folks at the Apple store give out incorrect information and tell people with 3G or 4G iPads they need to be within cell or wifi range for the internal GPS chip to work. This is totally false information.

All you need to do is see if you have a 3G or 4G enabled iPad. If you do, it has an internal A-GPS chip and will work OUT OF THE RANGE OF CELL OR WIFI.

If you have a NON 3G/4G iPad it WILL NOT WORK without an external GPS dongle.

I agree 100% on the Android part, and disagree 100% on the Navionics part (unless you really have to use their product).

More mis-information.

Actually the ipad has only 1 optional component(aside from memory). They all come with wifi. The 3g/4g hardware is optional. The GPS is embedded on the 3g/4g board.

Not GPS enabled, out of range of wifi and cellular ,and can still get a fix with just an Ipad............Interesting !
Sorry the question was worded funny. You said your device had GPS, then asked about getting gps with gps disabled. Didn't see or understand that part.

Clearly with gps turned off you will not get gps reception. Why you would think differently?

Tim is absolutely correct. The 3G/4G iPads have a built in GPS that works with or without a cellular or wifi connection. Wifi only iPads do not have an internal GPS and need to be connected to a Wifi network or a bluetooth GPS to provide position data. Its really that simple.

Well Mark, looks like you have your work cut out for you. Lots of devices out there and a tough decision to make. iPad with just WiFi and an external GPS; iPad with WiFi + 3g/4g capability but no cell service; Android with GPS.

Wish you the best of luck!

Well we,went and bought a128G wifi and cell model. No cell plan Getting it loaded up with apps for sailing/cycling/reading/photography/electronics manuals/e-books/netflix and some others along wither decent music selections. Navionics has a decent chart, $54. For all canada and us.this would be my backup to the plotter amd from there its paper. Wonder how many know how to still work paper
