I’ve noticed on the Garmin site that there are upgrades to the fireware for most GPS’s (not speaking of the G-Charts here, but the “built-in” software). In general, it looks like the upgrades update the “Port Info” icons. It requires a PC to GSP cable and probably some nerve. Has anyone attempted this procedure? Did you find it worthwhile? Or did the GPS end up getting send back to the factory after a failed attempt (come on, be honest)? Thanks

I have many times

I have updated all 3 of my Garmin GPS's through the web site down loads. The "fixes" do just as they say they do. It is a painless, very quick upgrade. I recommand doing it. Steve, s/v NOETA (P323)

result is a new gps

Like Steve Cook, I have upgraded my handheld GPS III several times. The result has been startling as significant new capabilities appear in the same old gps. e.g. accuracy circle, infinitly variable display brightness. Make sure that you have the proper interface set in setup. It does take a bit of nerve, especially the first time.

Things to watch when flashing a ROM

I have never flashed my GPS but I do flash the ROMs on high speed printers (50-100 ppm) as part of my job. Things to do first read the instructions twice then follow each step in the setup and check each step as you do it. Before you start the download check your steps one more time. Biggest mistake is not having the port on your computer set correctly. A parallel port can have be ECP or Bidrectional. You set that setting in your BIOS (usually go to the BIOS by hitting Del key during startup). Use the best cable possible.

Garmin 48

I did it on my Garmin 48 with no problems. Just followed the instructions. I built a pc cable from instructions off the web and with a connector from PFRANC located on the web. Good Luck Dave

Check Garmin GPS Updates Often

Just a final note . . . check for Updates often, even monthly. The Garmin 162 software has just recently been Updated to version 3.03. The Etrek Summit and GPSMAP76 have also been Updated recently. You get your free Updates by accessing http://www.garmin.com/support/download.html Let me know if you need additional assistance. The following is a list of what was changed between version 2.61 and version 3.03: Added support for GARMIN BlueChart cartography. Changed the 'Diver Down' waypoint symbol to use the international symbol. Changed the appearance of the 'poor coverage' symbol. Changed 'Off Course' indicator to include R or L to indicate direction. Changed map-based route editing to be consistent with other GARMIN marine products. Changed 'Go to Point' operation to use generic Find interface as done in other GARMIN marine products. Also changed proximity waypoint selection, route waypoint selection and Celestial Page position selection to use this interface. Changed to use tide station data from the internal map area in the product. This allows tide stations to be visible on the map, as well as allows future updates. Allow individual classes of NMEA sentences to be disabled. Added support for BWC, XTE, and VTG NMEA sentences. Added generation of 'Datum' NMEA sentence. Changed 'Altitude' to 'Elevation'. Added 'Point to on Map Page' option to map-based map feature review page. Re-named map 'Bearing Line' to 'Heading Line'; Added a new map feature called 'Bearing Line' which is a line from the vessel to the next waypoint. Re-named 'Active Route' line to 'Course Line' to be consistent with other GARMIN marine products. Pressing the 'Left' or 'Right' cursor keys in most lists now scrolls the list a page at a time. No longer show 'Basic Fishfinder' as an option menu choice on the 'Pages' tab for GPSMAP162. Reduced the amount of path smoothing done when saving tracks. Corrected a track saving problem that could cause unit lock-up when the active track is full in wrap mode, after staying in the same location for the full track history. Restore Celestial Page time
