OMDG! What a PITA! I spent the day in a tiny space trying to hook up the gps/autopilot. I am hoping that someone has the same system and can help me with what I am doing wrong. I have the Simrad wp 32 and the Garmin 178c and they work fine seperately but not together. The Simard has a junction box that is color coded so I am comfortable there. The Garmin has many wires but the instructions state, red, black {power and ground} and a blue wire for the autopilot Nmea port.I have wired those three wires into the same junction box[per the instructions}. I have changed the format on the gps also to the nmea {or whatever it's called}. As the instruction goes, it should work. The problem is, the autopilot doesn't fallow the waypoints I put in. Also the Nav light on the autopilot doesn't light up as the directions state it will when active and in waypoint mode. I have called both places {Garmin and Simrad} and they both blame the other. I have also searched the archives and read many posts but none for for the equipment I am using. Any ideas? Anyone hook up the same stuff and remember something that wasn't clear in the instructions?.... as always, Thanks, Jack

Same boat...

I have Simrad WP32 and Garmin 182...I finally gave up. Never could get the two to talk to each other. Both Garmin and Simrad seemed to blame the other and none of their suggestions worked. I couldn't get any sort of signal. BTW, I've had excellent customer support from both Garmin and Simrad on separate issues. This one just seems to beat them. Funny, we can hook up scores of computers in a network thanks to Micrsoft's design. I think there'd be a lot of pros around Tampa that could make it work for you? It has been done however, and there was some discussion in the archives that I found a while back.

Jack, I do not have a Simrad unit, but in...

order to get my 178C to communicate with our AP I connected the data out lead from the Garmin to the data in lead on the AP. Then I connected the Garmin data in lead to ground and the AP data out lead to ground. Terry

Mine doesn't talk either.

My WP30 & GPS45(Garmin) don't talk. I called Simrad & got the tech guy. He said (from my fading memory) that one of the units didn't have a data (out?) and to use the ground wire instead. Didn't work (if I did it correctly..) I gave up. Compass heading works great, oh well. Hopefully someone with success can inspire! Anyone?

Check archives

This was a problem for some sailors during the summer. It only seemed to be with Garmin, Thats why I bought a Standard Horizon unit and will be installing it this spring, I bought probably one of the last Simrad WP30's before the new 32 came out. Check, I think someone did come up with a solution
