Planning to work on my boat nowadays takes a spread sheet or a computer program around my house. Having 3 girls ( I know I Know ) 4 counting my beautiful wife, makes the most well thought out plan utterly worthless most of the time.. OK I can factor in the soccer the tennis the Church activities, the music lessons and doctor appointments, birthday parties and impromptu sleepovers, and even play rehursals. when required of me...but things like intermittent PMS social coulsluar... or figuring out who, how or why so in so is mad at them, or they mad at the other, sycoanalist MR. fix it guy Dad Thing. I have a great family and enjoy my roll..but gezzz! What class did is skip in school I shouldn't have?

Advaaaaaaaance planning

I have to calendar boat weekends 2-6 months in advance. But then again I am 350 miles away. And then sometimes you just gotta go. Realize that often they are happier without you around to say stupid guy things.

I think it was Mark Twain

Was it Mark Twain that said, "One child is not enough, and two is way too many?" I'm still trying to figure out if he included my wife in that equation. :)

sailing lessons

If you substitute sailing for socccer you may end upas we did, a crew for the boat, The only downside was they always were sailing and I was a passeger.

Actually this is perfect...

You will need a bigger boat! 3 girls and 3 of their boyfriends, your wife and her boyfriend... and you. You are in the 50' range now. Make sure you get something that can be sailed single handed with all lines leading aft... as sure as hell they would rather be in a powerboat going 60... than bobbin around with Dad. The classes you skipped were Health Ed... and Money 101! We are very pro-active here (Portland, Maine). 12 year olds can go into the school nurse and get birth control, condoms and the like... without parent consent! We are the San Francisco of the East Coast. I think this belongs in the sail call lounge, Rich

The sailing will come

Believe it or not, they will eventually move out, and when they do your wife will cry about the "empty nest syndrom", you'll be able to walk in the house naked again, and with luck the wife will still like to go sailing. Just think about it. 15 year old boat LIGHTLY USED, it will still be in great shape ;D Been there, done that, and have the t shirt

Stillraining, with two boys growing up I had similar demands

on my time. That is why my youngest was 23 years old and out of college and working before I bought Bietzpadlin. Prior to that I had a canoe. At least I didn't have three weddings to pay for.

I've got eight kids and six grandkids. Since I got the bigger

boat, finding crew is no object. Finding help to work on the boat is another story, usually.

You need

either a small singlehander to escape on or a BIG, BIG, boat that can carry most of their school so they'll want to go. One thing for certain, you'll miss what is now lunacy, but in retrospect will just be family life, once they've grown. Savor it.

The youngest is now 18. I do have two boats.

The V-21 and Oh Joy. The little boat sits looking rather forlorn in the driveway though.

Been there, Done that

It can be and is a pain in the a&@, but believe me, in a few years, when they have grown up and are living their own lives, you will miss it all. The + side is that one of these days there will be grand kids, whom you can spend a day with, enjoy that time, spoil the hell out of them and send them home.

Just do it.

I guess you do what I did. Just take them kicking and screaming. Then in a few years, they will say something out of the blue like "That was the best time of my life". That's when you know you did the right thing.

I must have left somthing out

They all like to sail...Working on the boat is another story..It's OK for the first hour or so but there kids... and hard to inspire for much longer..And they are busy keeping me busy.. I was more complaining on my ability lately to carve out the time my boat needs due to the mentioned things (Demands on spare time)... There has been some good and funny and sympathetic responses..all appreciated from my friends here at SBO...:) Well off to work will check back in latter..Have a great day guys..

The rule

My solution for our scheduling problems was very easy...warm temps arrive...I ignore everyonne...family...friends...weddings...the lawn...the house and even Church.(My Church is located out on the ocean). Late Friday nights I'm at Walmart stocking groceries for the morning and I drag the kids sailing every weekend with hubby in tow. That is the rule. If I hear an I'm bored or its too hot..my final answer.."shut up..too bad." Same applies to maintenance time on the boat..its just a priority that has to get done or the boat will got to crap..."here's a crab net and a pole go fish..." Actually they are not all that bad..they do get whiney and mine are 10, 4 and 37 ;)
