About six months back there was an active discussion about video cameras where the topic diverged somewhat to include mounting options on a sailboat. A few people asked me to post information about a gimbal mount that I was building for my boat. Although this subject is not directly related to sailboats, I though it was still appropriate as it deals with the problem of videoing a sailboat as the heel angle and direction is constantly changing. I finally got a chance to use it for the first time Tuesday night to check tacking angles. Here a photo of my gimbal mount and a link to a short video showing the results. Revision #2 will take care of some of the bounce caused by the lack of stiffness of the aluminum bracket. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the results. The entire mounting bracket can be rotated 360 degrees to allow you to take videos in all directions while still having the camera gimbaled.

That looks VERY well done, and looks to perform very nicely indeed. Very nice!

Can you slide it athwartship easily? The picture is stable and clean.... after a bit you might want to be able to move the camera from side to side quickly to bring more moving water into view.

Is the attachment a clamp or is there a hole in the push pit rail, perhaps a quick release lever lock mechanism so you could shift the position easily. The mounting frame is excellent.... I really like it...

GoPro camera mount

Woodster: I'm not a machinist and can't take credit for the gimbal mechanism. It was purchased at this site for less than $50.

Joe: The piece that clamps to the stern pulpit does move athwartship by loosening the knob and sliding the entire unit from side to side. The pulpit does not have any holes in it. The knob tightens the metal band below it which secures the bracket to the pulpit. That part is a Railfast fitting made by Forespar.

I bought a GoPro mount specially made for sailing that I really like: http://horizonkeeper.com
Check it out, it is probably what you are after.
BOUGHT one? Looks like you MAKE them. Please be open about that.

If that is indeed true, can you explain how your 'high-end hydraulic dampener works'? I can't see it in your pictures.
